Maybe I am thinking of Cinderella Man... There's one of those super limited edition 2 DVD sets that had more features than the HD DVD but I can't remember which one.

I think PQ will be the same, but DTS-HD MA will blow Dolby Digital-Plus away. So Blu-ray is poor in the features department (most likely due to space) but it's richer in the sound. Guess you have to figure what's more important.

The HD DVD had pretty good/great PQ if I remember right.

Blu-ray can never ever be a poor format when compared to HD DVD. HD DVD is dead, and Blu-ray is surging towards being the most accepted way to watch films in the comfort of your own living room.

Just because it's dead doesn't mean it's without merit. That rationale is dangerous, to say the least.

Blu-ray > HD-DVD

I really don't think we need to get into a discussion about whether blu ray is better than hd-dvd. Blu-Ray is a currently supported format. Blu-ray is the best available currently supported format. Let's not get into an argument about the merits of HD-DVD on a site called BLU-RAY.COM.

Not to be rude, but you can't just say that and assume all the other things that have been said don't matter. What DigitalfreakNYC is saying is that the HD DVD might've been better due to the fact that it has features. Saying "Blu-ray>HD-DVD" doesn't just make that go away.

The fact is that there were features on the HD DVD and DVD that aren't on the Blu-Ray assumingly due to the space restraints and BD-50 shortage. Like I said, I care about the movie, not the features. And I already have the HD DVD and regular DVD, so I don't need the features on my Blu-ray. But I can see how some might be upset about that. But for me, the DTS-HD MA is worth the upgrade just so I can have all my movies on one format instead of a bunch of different ones.

Is it the best available? In terms of what? Quality (picture/sound)?

That statement depends on what you are referring to. In generalization - you are correct. However, when a movie on blu-ray lacks some basic items that are found on dead/outdated formats, there is a problem.

That's just my opinion.

You aren't talking about the format though. You are talking about a studio's choice to leave features off a release. Surely nothing about the format limits the studio's ability to include these features.

True, other formats have a richer feature set than those announced in this release, but that is not a fault of the FORMAT.

1) I see no evidence of BD-50 shortage.
2) from the AVS forum (of all places):
Jarhead: 24.7 GiB - 26 563 248 128 bytes.

a 25GB blu ray would work fine.

This is a studio choice, not a format issue.

No evidence? How about the other day and date releases Universal has coming out on BD-25's without features? There was even a thread about the shortage on here and how some studios got first picks on BD-50's or something like that.

I don't understand what you're saying with the size of Jarhead though. Is that the size of the movie? Size of the features? Size of the disc? What? And how does that apply? Are you saying they should've compressed it more to fit features on there?

And it is the fault of the format if there isn't enough space for features.

That's the size of data on the HD-DVD. Including features.

No it wouldn't. That's the HD DVD size and with the higher audio files, it would be more than a BD25. As it is, it probably wouldn't fit on a BD-25.

Where's the DTS-HD MA track on there with the 1.5mbps core? It's comparing apples to oranges. But I think the point is being missed, all we were saying was that the HD DVD had features which might make it more appealing to some and the Blu-Ray does not. That's all.

I'm not at all missing the point that it would be nice to have the additional features. I would even go so far as to say that Uni is being irresponsible by not including the additional features, even if they would require a BD-50 or 2 BD-25s.
What I don't think everyone in this thread agrees on is whether or not it's the fault of the FORMAT or the STUDIO.
Blu-ray as a format could EASILY replicate the HD-DVD release.

they are obviously skippin out on the extras so they put can lossless audio. So if it didn't have lossless audio and extras ya'll would probably be complaining about that too.

Unfortunately through the end of 2008 and maybe early 2009 some of the Uni titles may not have features. They seem to have had to make cuts in order to release some titles this year. The production schedule for 2009 has probably been set in place by now and they will have capitlities to produce BD 50 releases on everything they want to. The delay some titles like Bourne were probably because of production delays and thier wanting to create the ultimate discs. In the case of Jarhead, the probably looked at it and thought that the features were not that great in the first place and wanted it to be a 2008 release. Uni really seems intent on releasing EVERYTHING with lossless sound. I bet 2009 for Universal and Blu Ray will be spectacular. Looking at the upcoming Day Date titles alone, Changeling, Frost/Nixon, Role Models, Milk, Tales of Desperaux, etc. I'd say the 1st have of 2009 will be quite good.

That doesn't make sense. As of right now, other regions are getting the complete extras. How would other regions have more access to BD50's? I just don't understand.
