I don't really think downloading of music is completely to blame for the decline of music sales nor is it the poor quality and I agree most music coming out over the past few years has pretty much been the same generic stuff, but when you figure that most of the people doing to music purchasing are teenagers and that's what they listen too that's what the record companies have to back. I for one am totally against downloading because of the poor quality of mp3's, however I don't buy CD's the way I used to unless it's from an artist I really like. Most of the time I listen to the Sirius radio in my car when I'm driving. With the various music choices offered on satellite radio I no longer feel the need to buy every CD just because it has one or two songs I like. So, you really have to look at all the factors in the decline of CD sales.
Music downloads Satellite Radio Not enough good quality music out there And dare I say it, the average teenagers poor taste in music because of what MTV and other forms of media are telling them they should like because they can't or won't think for themselves. |

Sure, some bands like R.E.M. are putting out good music. But those guys have been around since the early 1980s. Same for the B-52's or Emilou Harris. It's really difficult for new performers with different takes on music to catch a break. Unfortunately most new arrivals have to fit into some damned formula. |

actually, that isn't entirely true. a lot of the people on my list have not been around that long and are making big waves on the charts. 5 of the artists on that list in fact have only been around at the most 10 years. if that. as for those acts from the 1980's i think it's more difficult for the older acts to really do big now, as a lot of the music that made them so popular is really out of fashion now. r.e.m. has had their best music sales since 1996. that says a lot. i think newer acts stand a better chance of hitting the marker than an older act these days. though i do agree with you about music having to fit some damned formula these days. also my original point is in agreeance with what you're saying about excellent music being out there. that was my whole point. i think music has really gotten better in the last three years. there is so much great music out there right now and a lot of it doesn't have to be discovered as it's getting a lot of great press and sales. |

I think this is awesome. A couple of the wal-marts around me have real crappy selections. They only have just an end-cap and that's it.
CD's downsizing from wal-mart doesn't effect me since they don't sell unedited CD's. I get most of my CD's from K-Mart since they have close to the same price and have the unedited ones. |
