Default What a question

You have asked such a difficult question. "What speakers should I buy"

Nobody can hear sound for you. You have to go and hear tons and tons of speakers.

I believe I am sort of like you. I am no audiophile, but I like loud and clear sounding music. I have a decent ear, but not exceptional.

Here is what I did.

1992- I started my search. I had a decent budget so I could listen to some reasonably high priced speakers. I cannot remember many of the long gone store names but I went over and over to several different stores. I really enjoyed several different speaker brands but many were pricing me out.

1992 Became 1993 - I still had not made a decision. I kept appearing at various stores listening to any new speakers and many times just sitting and listening to speakers I had heard many times. ( I always brought my own music. I wanted to know how a speaker handled my favorites. I used to bring Mark Knoffler for his rich deep voice). I knew many store clerks by name and they let me sit in their speaker rooms and crank up the sound.

It was sometime in 93 that I first heard a pair of Mirage Mx-Si speakers. Damn did my ear like the way they sounded. These were not cheap speakers (at least for me). I went back and forth several times and finally decided I had to have a pair. I settled on a pair of M5-Si. I added some new Carver components (I wanted higher end components but I fit into my budget).

I know it took me about two years but when I got everything home I knew I was going to be happy, and I was. I loved the system. I still have everything I purchased that day. I've added some amps and a good center speaker but not much else. This system still gives my ear a rich listening experience.

The moral of my story is for you to please spend the time and don't rush. It is easy to just pick a nice set of expensive speakers. But what about the set of speakers you didn't hear? Get out there and spend the time. When you finally purchase hopefully you'll have a set of great speakers for the rest of your life. I know I'll never part with my Mirage M5-si's. My only regret is I did not save longer and get myself the M1-Si's, but My wife might get me a used set someday. A man can dream.

Good luck in your search

have you checked B&W speakers? pretty sure they have something in a monitor and sub that would be in your price range. the monitors are easily moved and adding the sub would give you the bottom end for serious music listening.

It sounds to me like the option you would be most happy with would be getting some nice bookshelf speakers and pairing them with a good quality subwoofer.

There are infinite options for speakers, and making a decision based on what you like and what you can afford is often very difficult.

If you go this route, I whole heartedly recommend HSU Research subwoofers. Excellent bass for the buck.
