Isn't The Hobbit where Bilbo has his adventures and first acquires the Ring which sets up LOTR?

The only rights they currently have are for Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit. Not sure if they tried to get more but it does seem that Christopher is not really a big fan of the movies.

As for the second movie, it is not merely some of the stories from other books. It is actually part of the hobbit, and things that were not published by Tolkien, re-written and edited for film. In other words, they are not part of the movie rights at all since they are not part of the other works. It should focus more on things that happen during the Hobbit (like with Gandalf) that were not published.
I could be wrong in the details there but they have known for a long time they don't have the rights to the other books but decided to make 2 movies. They are not trying to screw over the Tolkien estate, but they are trying to make the best movies they can.
Some argue that they should not be made, fine. But from what Del Toro said, he is trying to keep more with the spirit of the book, making it bridge the gap between the hobbit book, and the LotR movies. Then again, a lot of people said LotR should not have been made, and some still do. But tough luck. They were made and no one got hurt cause of it. If people don't want to see it, don't see it. But when LotR came out to theaters, sales of the book went up 1000 fold! I'm not exaggerating, that was the estimate given.

Well the only thing it could be about would be the rise of Dol Guldur in Mirkwood and Gandalf's imprisonment there.

So was that decided after Christopher filed suit against New Line Cinema? I don't recall hearing anything after reading the suit again NLC, can't seem to find an update either.

You tell that to Sean Astin's foot and Viggo Mortenson's finger. Just kidding!

But now wait a minute...

i've heard that The Hobbit will be "2 movies"... is this 2 1.5-hour movies, or 2 3-hour movies like FOTR, TTT and ROTK?

because then technically it could be as long as any of the other 3 movies, but split in releases...
_______________________________________________

I've been reading the books starting with The Hobbit (i'm half-way through Two Towers), and there's so much in the books that can't even fit into a 3 hour movie.

the 4 lord of the rings books are one of the absolute best stories... after the 7 Chronicles of Narnia books of course

I know that the first movie is supposed to use the actual book for the plot, but does anyone know what the second movie is supposed to be based off of? I know it's supposd to bridge between "The Hobbit" and LotR, but is there a unfinished story they are basing it off of, or are they just making it up? Can't wait for the films either way. I think Del Toro was a good choice for director with P.J. as a producer, especially since P.J. will still be heavily involved (or so I hope).

Actually, The Hobbit itself is just one movie. The second film is a "bridge" film that is going to focus on one of the characters, yet undecided, from LOTR to tie them all in together. This is according to www.theonering.net.

Sigh. Unless they pull something completely out of their arse, the only possible story will be the rise of Dol Guldur in Mirkwood and Gandalf's imprisonment there.

I've posted this before, but I'll do it again for the sake of the newbies

# July, 2941 - Bilbo Baggins obtains the One Ring; the White Council drives Sauron out of Dol Guldur
# 2941 - Esgaroth is attacked by the dragon Smaug, who is consequentially killed by Bard the Bowman; Battle of Five Armies
# June 22, 2942 - Bilbo Baggins returns to Bag End

---END OF THE HOBBIT---

# 2951 - Estel, later known as Aragorn, comes of age and is told about his heritage; the Corsairs of Umbar officially ally themselves with Mordor and destroy great monument commemorating Ar-Pharazôn's victory over Sauron
# 2953 - Last meeting of the White Council. Fengel, fifteenth king of Rohan, dies. His son Thengel returns to Rohan to succeed him.
# 2956 - Aragorn first meets Gandalf the Grey
# 2957-2980 - Aragorn as Thorongil serves in the armies of King Thengel of Rohan, and Steward Ecthelion II of Gondor
# September 22, 2968 - Frodo Baggins is born
# 2978 - Birth of Boromir
# 2980 - Arwen pledges her hand in marriage to Aragorn; Frodo Baggins loses both of his parents in a boating accident; Aragorn, in the service of the Steward of Gondor Ecthelion II leads a taskforce south and kills the Captain of the Haven, ruler of Umbar; Samwise Gamgee born;[14] Théoden, son of Thengel, becomes seventeenth king of Rohan after the death of his father.
# 2982 - Birth of Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry)
# 2983 - Birth of Faramir
# 2989 - Frodo Baggins comes under the guardianship of Bilbo Baggins; a company of Dwarves, led by Balin, try to recolonize Moria
# 2990 - Birth of Peregrin Took (Pippin)
# 2991 - Birth of Éomer
# 2994 - Balin is killed; the dwarf-colony in Moria is destroyed
# 2995 - Birth of Éowyn

---BEGINNING OF LORD OF THE RINGS---

# 3001 - Bilbo Baggins turns 111, passes the One Ring on to Frodo Baggins, and leaves the Shire. From now on Aragorn and Gandalf intermittently hunt Gollum

There is a lot of stuff that happens between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Enough to make a fairly lengthy movie.

Seriously do you think we're going to see Elves dancing around singing 'tra la la?'
My guess is that the movie will not have the same flavor as the book, since Tolkien wrote the book for children. The hobbit movie will almost certainly have to maintain the same atmosphere as the LOTR movies. The difference in interpretation will probably be similar to the differences in artwork of Alan Lee's illustrated version of The Hobbit compared to Michael Hague's. As a Tolkien fan and annual reader of the Hobbit and LOTR, I look forward to the movie.

Too much confusion, little clarity.

I thought The Hobbit was based off the book, and would be a movie on it's own. Now I'm hearing about a second movie, whats that about?

When does the parts between End of The Hobbit and Beginning of LOTR take place?

I hope that is the way they go also. I would have a serious hard time watching Ian McKellen play Gandalf the way he was in The Hobbit. I agree that to keep the same look and feel as Lord Of The Rings
