The people who suggest these ideas don't really understand why directors choose a certain aspect ratio. Because of this, they only see black bars as a bad thing. If you change the aspect ratio to fit a TV, you inevitably give something up in the process.

The other problem is, all the tools are there to make things full screen. Its called a button on your TV remote. Why would anyone want to make a picture happy for them when it will upset a million other people?

I suppose this is one idea for dlc if it happens. Just have a ratio that fills the screen as an option. When someones head is half off the screen they can complain about that too.

i asked him why do you have it on this? he says the MONSTER hdmi cable is not giving him sound with the HD channels so he leaves it on SD. i tell him so why dont you take it back? he says yea i am( still to this day he hasn't taken it back) mind you he paid $100 for this cable and its not even 6 feet. i told him all about monoprice and he says oh wow thats crazy! im like yea! he still hasn't gotten around to getting those cables so it looks like im going to have to get it for him
so right now as we speak( or type) he whaching SD content blown up on a nice 52" samsung......sad i know but it gets way better.

He still doesn't even have a blu-ray player and he still buys DVD's!
He recently got speed racer and i told him do you how amazing that looks on blu-ray? i keep telling him to buy a ps3 but he tells me its still to exspensive. im like so buy a stand alone player, he says yea i am. i told him on black friday you could get one for under $300, he says yea im going do that........still no BD player

And guess what, he just got the dark night.........on FULL SCREEN DVD!!!!!! ohhhh i give up!!
Ya man i got a friend like that to. He bought a 60" 1080p Pioneer Elite Kuro and he watches all 4:3 content stretched. And even after I explained to him all about aspect ratios (he didnt realize the picture was being stretched until i pointed it out) he still watches it that way because he feels like hes wasting his TV when hes not using every inch of the screen.

Some people man....... some people

I love my 1.33:1 aspect ratio on JLA that's why. If they made it 1.85:1 then it would be stretched out and distorted and not look right.

Hey pal... don't blame the home media format, the studios, or the media encoding company. Blame the film directors. The directors are the ones who decide on the film's aspect ratio during pre-production... and they have about 6 to choose from. Blu-ray simply maintains the artistic decision of said director as "the way that the film is meant to be seen."

If you stop touching yourself, filmmakers will consider the possibility of shooting all films in spherical.

Taking most movies and making them 1:85:1 is the equivalent of the fullscreen DVDs on a SD TV. So why did you freak out on her, but now want to essentially do the same thing?

I buy blu-rays specifically for the 2.40:1 aspect ratio. I feel disappointed if I get 1.85:1. If I wanted 1.85:1 I would've just bought a special edition DVD instead.

It feels closer to the experience of seeing a movie in the theater the first time. That's one of the things I love about older movies being released in this format. I can imagine what it would've been like to see Superman (for instance) when it was first released.

Why can't you accept that 1.85:1 may not have been the director's vision for the film?

Jeez.

The silliness never ends when it comes to playing Hollywood movies within one's living room. One the saddest things is some tool getting his new 16X9 HDTV screen, loading up one of his fool screen DVD movies and playing it in stretch-o-vision mode on that new HDTV.

Original Aspect Ratio only. That's my view on it.
I agree. Anyone who doesn't want the original aspect ratio, doesn't really like movies.

if ur watching a movie and all u can focus on are the black bars then theres two problems :1. must be a crappy movie 2. you might have ADD

I watch movies in complete darkness and can even see the black bars regardless, they dont bother me at all, its what the director intended

I wasn't suggesting changing films from their original aspect ratio, if it was 1.85:1, to 2.40:1. I was just saying I get a lot more enjoyment out of 2.40:1 than 1.85:1.

I prefer 2.40:1 to 1.85:1. If the director preferred 1.85:1 than I don't want to change that (let his vision be the version that makes it to blu-ray), but I typically enjoy 2.40:1 more.

I want to see the whole movie... Not only beginning to end, but side to side.

Watch the widescreen version of Die Hard vs the Pan & Scan... The sceen where 'Al Powell' is checking out the lobby of the building. In the P&S version you don't see any of the terrorist waiting to kill him at the end of the hallway. The widescreen version is much more intense.

By the way. I just want to give you a heads-up, Cassablanca is pillarboxed for the same reasons that most movies are letterboxed... So you don't need to complain about it.

It is funny to me how a lot of people come on here and say that 1.85:1 films look better because the whole screen is filled up but most of the highest rated films in terms of picture quality are filmed in the wider ratio's (except for the Hellboy series).

Default The Golden Rectangle

I've said this before, but I'll say it again.
IMHO 2.35 and beyond is TOO wide. Maybe it made sense in the 1950's when movies were competing with TV, and Cinerama laid down the gauntlet. But those days are long gone.
I think 1.85 is a much more natural shape (closer to the so-called "golden rectangle"...look it up). As the great Fritz Lang once said, "Cinemascope is good for two things: snakes and funerals".
Having said all that, I (of course) insist on seeing films the way they were originally intended to be seen (wide or not).
