The threads about it over on AVS are insane. Basic reading comprehension is out the window. Most seem to either gloss over or not read the reporting period nor understand the differences in reporting regarding shipped and sold. It's really sad in a lot of ways.

It took 1 whole post at HTF for the low numbers hand wringing (tm) to start up.

I guess it was probably like this with dvd also and I just don't remember but the level of negativity and lack of patience is stunning.

One interesting thing here is the actual unit sales numbers:

Quote:
"Casino Royale" Blu-ray is the top seller in the Action/Adventure category, with a YTD of 28,306 units (a little off the 100,00 shipped mark that was reported earlier). "The Departed" Blu-ray is on top of the Drama category with 38, 993 units sold. "Talladega Nights" is tops for Comedy at 10,346 units sold. "Saw 3" Blu-ray is atop the Horror genre, with 14,441 units sold.
OK, a total of less than 40K combined Blu Ray/HD DVD sales for Departed.

That is not much!

I wonder how many DVDs of these titles were sold in the same period.

We're going to need to have some more affordable Blu Ray players on stream to move things to the next level.

Really, that would only show that there are more BD buyers out there that will buy a horrible movie than HD buyers that buy good movies. Right?

Well, Batman Begins was pretty decent in my books.

The movie tobythetitan was talking about was Batman RETURNS (which sucked), not Begins (which was awesome). And yes, toby, it would mean that. So, since early adopters are more likely just to get the best BD movies, Batman Returns on BD outselling Batman Begins on HD-DVD would mean that the BD market has penetrated to people who buy any movie, no matter how bad it is. So a horrible BD movie outselling a great HD-DVD movie would be pretty crazy.

PS And, of course, I'm being sarcastic. I suspect some are trying to be as well, but some others don't quite seem to get it.

Thank you. As we should all remember, Batman Begins is a PREQUEL.

It's worth keeping in mind that these figures could be skewed slightly in favour of HD-DVD. The reasoning is, these figures are based on the US only with a number being online stores. I can't comment for other countries but if you live in Aus you can get a limited supply of BD locally that have NOT been anywhere near the US. For the HD-DVD Fanboi club about the only way of getting discs is importing from the US, so the HD-DVD are slightly higher than what what they would be if HD-DVD availability was the same as Blu-ray (they will also be purchasing online not from Walmart). Unsure about Europe. If these stats covered the all the world it's possible the ratio could be 3:1 in favour of Blu-ray.

There are Blu-ray owners in Europe that buy from US online sites as well. Of course, not many on the week ending March 18. But, considering the small number HD-DVD players in Europe, personally, I think it's pretty fair (if just considering Europe as an outside buyer).
