Movie Gallery and other video stores I have read that they get around 25% or 30% of their income from porn DVD. They claim it keeps them in business since other video stores like blockbusters are family stores that do not carry hard core adult videos.

wow, I honestly had no idea that many people buy DVD's of porn...but you take into consideration how many people actually DON'T have internet access or cable TV access for that matter...

there are actually a few people who are like this...and also there are people who probably like to collect porn or just like buyinh the DVD...

but when you're talking the price of a BD...or a HD-DVD, are they really THAT dedicated to their porn?..

First of all, who rents movies from places other than Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, or NetFlix? Probably not people that would not be interested in HD at all. These businesses don't rent/sell porn (as far as my searches go), so where is all this porn coming from?
people forget that DVD players can be had for 30 bucks...and the people buying these players sure aren't thinking about HD porn right now...

"look at the clear detail of her...uhh..is that a rash?...

The Movie Gallery chain is big in the towns I spend my time, Nixa, MO, Springfield, MO and Little Rock, AR. I have never seen a porn section in the stores, but I will check now based on this statement. I don't think it is an accurate quote from anybody at The Movie Gallery.

I don't believe porn will have any impact on the format war this time. I don't know I buy that it had an impact in the past, but I don't really know.

I do not own any porn on any format. The reason I started the link is I am tired of reading about new stories about the porn industry and the format war when the facts get twisted around by the porn industry and people that are pro HD-DVD. Video stores like Movie Gallery and other video stores I have read in Video business magazine that a lot of retail stores that rent porn get 25%-30% of their total income from porn purchases and rentals.
In some states the American Family association and other groups have stopped Movie Gallery from carrying porn. Around 4 states. In many states Movie Gallery has a big porn section. Also DVD Empire Adult online section has an unlimited rental DVD porn program where people pay an unlimited monthly fee for disc rentals.

Some people are really into porn and over the years have purchased $50+ collectors editions on Laserdisc and DVD that contain directors commentaries and special bonus features. Many of the high budget porn movies were shot on 35mm film and could easily be mastered in 1080P/24 HDTV.

I just spent some time researching HD-DVD and BLU-RAY porn titles. Currently HD-DVD has more titles. Digital Playground and Wicked Pictures are exclusive to HD-DVD format. Vivid is format neutral releasing on both HD-DVD and BLU-RAY.

All the current HDTV porn titles

1. Teen America: Mission #3 (720P) HD-DVD (Digital Playground) $49.95
2. Pirates (720P) HD-DVD (Digital Playground) $44.95
3. Island Fever 3 (720P) HD-DVD (Digital Playground) $49.95
4. Camp Cuddly Pines Powertool Massacre (720P) HD-DVD (Wicked Pictures) $49.95
5. Curse Eternal (1080P) HD-DVD (Wicked Pictures) $49.95 (Coming Soon)
6. Island Fever 4 (1080P) HD-DVD (Digital Playground) $49.95 (Coming Soon)
7. Debbie Does Dallas...Again (1080P) HD-DVD (Vivid) $49.95 (Coming April 18th)
8. Debbie Does Dallas...Again (1080P) BLU-RAY (Vivid) $49.95 (Coming April 18th)

We need to put this in perspective.

When VHS was adopted by the porn industry and helped kill beta, that was at a time when porn was unavailable to the average consumer, who apparently had a huge hunger for this type of content.

Now, we have a totally different situation. The industry is not trying to break into home video for the first time. Porn fans have stacks of VHS, DVDs, CD-Rs full of XXX content. They are not sitting around waiting for porn studios to decide whether they will go high def. The average Joe doesn't even care about hi def yet.

HD-DVD porn provides no advantages for the average porn fan and I'm confident that any survey would prove me right. Go to the usenet forums or adult dvd forums and ask who would buy HD-DVDs. I doubt you'd find more than 1% who are interested.

Remove "porn" and "adult" from your statement above, and at this point you'd probably get the same answer for the general DVD buyer as well.

Porn may have been a factor in VHS over Betamax, but it wasn't touted continuously as so. It silently happened.

I actually hope the HD DVD fanatics keep it up. Owning HD DVD will be like having a $2 bill in your wallet once upon a time.

"Honey, which format should we buy? One has lots of porn, and the other one has Disney titles."

Quoted for being accurate and funny. HD-DVD fanatics might be hurting the format with porn stories every other week. I do not think Toshiba or Microsoft is going to be mentioning the two exclusive porn studios to HD-DVD to often.

HD-DVD exclusive studios

Universal Studios
Digital Playground
Wicked Pictures

BLU-RAY exclusive studios

Disney
Fox
Sony Pictures

I think most people will choose BLU-RAY for its exclusive studios. Those that want porn can purchase from Vivid which is format neutral.

It was Vivid that first mentioned that most porn is shot on $3K 1080i cameras.

- 1080i not 1080p
- Compressed not raw

You can't get back what is lost when it is shot.

Vivid use professional HD movie cameras.

Simple rule of thumb:

If a company can afford the equipment required for HD discs, they can afford to produce the discs on Blu-ray.

I don't even think we need to think anything more porn's effect unless we see a title pop-up in the top 50 sales.

the staggering numbers of porn dvd's sold for $24.99 or less (and free online) will far out-weigh any porn on blu-ray that's priced over $25. And that's the bottom line, so this thread is over.
