That would work for the BD player, but not for the TV or XBox. I was surprised not to see a 5.1 audio output set on the back of the TV, I thought it was set up for that. But that still wouldn't fix the problem with the external speakers volume control being disabled when the internal speakers are off.

We have Dish Network right now. SD service althoug we are hoping to catch a holiday special and upgrade to HD maybe this month or next. Coax comes out of the DN box to the TV. Whatever solution is devised, it has to serve the Dish box, the Xbox, and the BD player for it to be practical.

Do you have ANY money for a stereo system? I just upgraded mine and I'd be willing to sell you my replaced items. All Sony, the speakers are a few years old but the receiver is only 1 year old. If you do, PM me and make an offer. Otherwise, it's just sitting in my house.

I appreciate the offer, really. We anticipate getting a receiver someday and I would prefer to put any available funds towards that (eventual) purchase. For now, I'm looking at zero cost options only.

It just blows that Samsung would disable the volume control for external speakers. I just CAN'T figure out the logic that thought that was a good idea!

Hmm i hate to say it but i dont think any solution i can come up with will fix everything.

I mean if the dish box has a volume control then yes you can get it to work when watching tv but not with all the other inputs.

I hate to say it but a reciever is probably going to be your best solution.

Try CraigsList.org and check your local area. You may be able to pick up a used one in your local area inexpensive till you can afford a new one.

The only other thing i can think of is.... you can contact an authorized service center in your area. Have them come out and actually unplug your speakers internally. That way you could fool your tv into thinking your speakers are on but not hooked up. Then you should be fine. I wonder if you got and extended warranty if that would cover the trip. I just dont want you to go and void and warranty anyways.

when i had my samsung tv opened up 9not the same model) , the wires that run from the speaker , ran to a circuit board,,,which wasn't soldered. There was a connector. so if you were to crack open your tv you may be able to disconnect the cable for the speakers and not cut them. Of course there isn't any way to know fi the system has some type of internal check that would throw up and error because the speakers are not plugged in. Also run into warranty issue if samsung can tell you opened up the tv as well.

However that would no doubt void the warranty, something I am loathe to do on an electronic device costing $2 grand. The volume control works JUST FINE as long as you are listening to both the internal and external speakers. However, when you do that, they are out of sync by about 1/3 of a second so it creates an echo chamber effect that cannot just be ignored. OMG I can't believe this.
by setting to external speakers, volume is no longer controlled by the TV set!! you are the one disabling your volume control. the volume is now controlled by your powered speakers. You will not find a TV in existance that does what you want, so its really not your TV's issue. Its operator error, and a lack of understanding regarding what external means.

Samsungs do not have "Variable Audio Output" (unlike every other TV ever made).

So I guess I have been hallucinating the past 10 years with my previous TV set that worked exactly the way I want and expect? That TV still exists, I carried it to the next room but it hasn't dropped into a wormhole from the singularity that the logical impossibility of it's existence caused... oh wait, check the universe you live in, maybe there's a wormhole there because the laws of physics are different on your side...

Is it "me" disabling my volume control? In a causitive way, yes, but in an intentional way, no. My intention is to adjust the volume sent to the external speakers, just the way it worked PERFECTLY on my Panasonic set for 10 years. In my view, it is Samsung that is disabling the volume control because they are not letting me make a perfectly simple and reasonable decision about how to configure my audio settings on the TV - just the way it was working on my Panasonic for the past decade. I feel that this is Samsung's choice and they bear the responsibility for it. I strongly disagree with their decision but it is a little late to do anything about it short of a firmware upgrade to address this issue which I highly doubt will ever be forthcoming.

Wish I had known this before purchasing. No it's not a deal killer but I maybe would have looked longer and harder at alternatives. Not ONE of the reviews I read for this set said anything about the lack of variable audio output. At least I would not feel like I got suckered.

This is really pretty easy. Just get an mini jack to RCA converter and plug your computer speakers into the headphone jack on the tv. Then you should be able to use the tv volume controls.

Dude, that is BRILLIANT. Now that's the kind of thinking I was looking for here! If this kills sound to the internal speakers while still allowing the volume control to work... you, sir, are a genius of the Wile E. Coyote variety. Thank you for the suggestion!

I will give this a shot and report back.

That's ma'am...... and you are welcome. It works on my MIL's Vizio. She lives in a nursing home and has to share a room. Her room mate always plays her own tv loudly...... so I got an extra set of PC speakers and put them on the night stand near my MIL's head so she would be able to hear her shows over her neighbor's.

Just tried it and IT WORKS!

For anyone interested, here are the details...

Internal speakers on the TV set to ON.

Plug headphones into designated headphone jack on left side of TV. After about 1.5 seconds, TV recognizes headphones are plugged in and turns off the internal speakers and routes audio to the headphones.

Adjust volume using TV remote - volume adjustment WORKS!

Final piece of the puzzle is to get a male-male stereo patch cord to route the headphone audio to the external powered speaker set. A 10 minute, $10 trip to Radio Shack and I'm in business!

robinandtami you came up with a ROCKIN idea! Hope Santa is good to you this year because YOU DESERVE IT! Thanks again friend!

I'm a very happy man now and all my anger towards Samsung has dissappated... ahhhhhhh bliss...

OMFG my wife had a male-male patch cord laying around to plug her iPod into audio devices and it works perfectly. There's my zero-dollars, zero-cents solution. Thanks again!
