It's too bad cause the new version was not truly bad but I just wasn't able to enjoy it. My friend just keep giving me a hard time over it cause he loved it and he also love the original. It's usualy not about the movie being bad, you must have seen some of my other posts in other thread I can defend or love some movies that many will just find terrible.

I am affraid that with this new Earth Stood Still, I might once again not be able to enjoy it cause the original is such a big part of my childhood. They sure don't stack up FX wise but they just can't replace the nostalgia of the original one, I guess that's the best way to explain it. That is why I am thinking I will probably not see it in the theater, just wait for it to be on TMN.

Excellent point of view. I saw your reasons as very logical. I, too, am waiting to see the 'new' version, but the origional is quite possibly my favorite of all movies. So I must put aside my feelings about that and go to the theater with a clear and open mind. (I hope!)

no offense taken, i see your point. here is the deal about me, I am huge film collector, hell I am a manager at a movie theatre till i am done with my corporate law program. I find the originals to be history that is made, they are all great films. take James Bond for example Daniel Craig is a good choice for the character but he cannot replace sean connery and Roger moore. I haven't seen the original Day the Earth Stood Still because i knew if i see it first then i will hate the new one. I can tell you one thing though the new is pretty good.

I look forward to seeing the remake. With my free ticket or at least $7.50 toward the ticket from the e-ticket from the Original Blu-ray I figure I can't go too wrong.

No one messes with Gort. Does the new Gort really look like Robocop? On the other hand, I really did like the remake of KING KONG.

Other Sci-fi classics I am not too happy about remakes being made for are:

When Worlds Collide
Creature From The Black Lagoon
(I believe these two are both in pre-production)

That being said, I am somewhat intrigued at the possibility of a remake of THIS ISLAND EARTH (as of now, there are no plans for a remake that I am aware of).

Sigh... Can you imagine 50 years from now remakes being made of Harry Potter, Indiana Jones and Star Wars? Euuuueeeew.
About when the Worlds Collide yes you are right it is in pre production and guess what who is directing..........Steven Speilberg. he is a good director but i don't like his remakes such as War of The Worlds.

i don't think you would my friend. The movie War of The World had a great graphic and cinematography, yet it is Tom Cruise, the guy is wooded board that is walking around just like that guy who played anakin skywalker in Star Wars ep 2 and 3 just terrible acting.

I've seen it. And this thread should be merged with the existing master thread.

As far as films replacing the original nostalgia value, it JUST CAN'T. But that shouldn't be the criteria for the producers and directors to make the movie or for the critics to judge the remake with.

The other night I watched the Blu-ray (original) version of The Day The Earth Stood Still and it was glorious. The PQ (for an old B&W film) was marvelous. The sound track was great. It was like watching the film for the very first time, in the best way possible.

They started off the Blu with a lengthy trailer of the new film. I dunno. It was all amped up like the World of the Worlds remake. I just didn't like the newer version of War very much (visually remarkable but the acting and the script, eh...), so I'm leary of this latest remake.

Violence and destruction seemed to be prominent once again. Sometimes that makes an interesting movie and sometimes it doesn't. Modern film makers occasionally forget that a little charm and subtlety can also make for a wonderful film experience. We'll see.

Critics are overall panning the remake as it currently stands at a mere 22% on RottenTomatoes (and is possibly the worst-reviewed movie Jennifer Connelly has ever been in... yes, even worse than "The Hulk").

I haven't been to the theater in quite a while but I'm really tempted to try to see this one at an IMAX theater. Thanks for the info.

This movie is so blatantly environmentalist, it made me sick. Actually, for a piece of fiction, it was good but as soon as we walked out of the theater, my dad said, "The plot was so simple." True.

The movie is already a financial sucess for Fox: Fox's remake of the sci-fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still" survived critics' toxic attacks in weekend-winning style, as the Keanu Reeves starrer landed atop the domestic boxoffice with an estimated $31 million in opening grosses.

Many critics judged the film harshly as measured against Robert Wise's 1951 original, but Fox execs said the PG-13 "Day" opened better than they had anticipated.

"With the holiday playtime coming up, we're going to have a great and profitable run," Fox senior vp distribution Chris Aronson said.

"Day" also registered $39 from 90 foreign territories for a worldwide gross of $70 million. Its domestic haul included $3.8 million from Imax giant-screen venues.

Produced for an estimated $80 million, "Day" attracted audiences skewing 55% male, with 51% of patrons under 25.
