That might've been the intent.

The whole "Wonka's past" thing was also invented for the movie, and had nothing to do with the book.

I read the book when I was a kid. I don't remember much of it.

No it wasn't. The only truly unfaithful element of the classic was the different songs and the "bad egg"/"bad nut" scene. The recent version nailed the "bad nut" scene rather well (I never did understand why they changed it to geese and golden eggs), but also was not entirely faithful to the songs, and they also added a ton of backstory for Willy Wonka and stuff that makes no sense. The ending is also drastically different. Neither of them really got the Oompa Loompas right.

I liked the way they handled Wonka's look in the recent one (particularly the pale skin), but the hair was wrong. Should've been wild like in the classic. Color is irrelevent, but when you make it so "perfect" and in-line, it takes away the message it says about him as a person.

That aside, I like the visual styling a little better in the new one I think. The sharp colors and brilliant imagery. A shame they bungled the story and tried to make Wonka a real person rather than a character. The sad part is that I bet Depp could have probably hit the sweet spot like Wilder did if he had been given proper direction. Instead they pushed the character into another direction that really makes him completely unfamiliar.

It was meant to be unfamiliar. The perfect hair was meant to show the new character's OCD considering his own looks. He has to have his teeth shiny and clean too.

I think the movie is much better the second time. After you've excepted it more's a re-imagining than a remake. And AnnaSophia Robb and that boy are great.

Really liked this one. Hopefully we'll get a better transfer than the somewhat flat and grainy HD-DVD version.

Hated those bloody Oompa Loopma musical set pieces though.

It didn't need to be a "re-imagining" or a "remake".

It should have been a faithful book-to-film adaptation, with those amazing visuals popped in for good measure. The visuals was one thing I never really liked about the original. I could buy into most of it, even the changes, but the visuals just didn't pop like they should have. This recent one has great visuals but missed the mark in many other departments.

There were merely 3 things I liked better about the remake...

1.) The squirrel/bad nut scene was better than the geese/golden egg scene.

2.) The chocolate river actually looked like a chocolate river instead of a river of sewer waste.

3.) Though I liked the kid who played Charlie in the original, Freddie Highmore is an amazing child actor and I was quite fond of him in the remake.

Besides these 3 things, the original completely owns the remake in every other way.

I would argue that the Tim Burton version was more like the book, storywise (except for the ending, I mean, come on, the one time he should have ended with a cliffhanger he didn't). And what's with Johnny Depp- one of the rare times I think he was horribly miscast.

Now, the Gene Wilder one is overall a much better film. It just had that element of the characters, and it had a much warmer tone than we saw with the remake. Now, hopefully we get the original day and date with the new one.

I'm not saying what it should have been. If I was, however, making another faithful book-to-film adaptation after an already near-perfect one is very pointless.

My only problem was the music/oompa loompas. Otherwise I thought Depp, Burton, and the kids did fantastic.

This is great news! I was hoping this would be released before too long (I'm hoping it's the expanded version with a few extra minutes like the HD-DVD). Most Tim Burton films look amazing in HD and I'm hoping this will be no exception.

This comment made me laugh a little.

But not too much, since I barely have a sense of humor.

Hopefully this being released can make some headroom for the original Wonka film to get a "Ultimate edition" style release. It might take a couple more years, but if my math is correct, it's 40th anniversary is coming up in '11. Though I don't want to wait that long.

I want the original version also.. they prob need to do some restoration on it who knows... but I want Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I will still buy this one it has some good points.

also I like Depp... but Burton should have chosen Christopher Walken in the role.
