that's hard for me to say as a lot of the movies that i loved i am willing to admit are not really of oscar caliber. but if i had to nominate 3 i would nominate the following:
the dark knight wall-e the x-files: i want to believe sure, the x-files is sci-fi and entertainment. not really oscar material. but i think that i want to believe is different. it plays like an oscar type of film and it has the best performances i've seen on screen this year. i thought billy connelly was amazing and deserves a best supporting actor nomination. his role was brief but very nuanced. you actually believed this guy and felt sorry for him in some way. even when you know you really shouldn't. i just think there's much to this movie to love. from the cinematography (which is the best i've ever seen and should win) down to the acting. |

I have yet to watch a lot of the movies that are getting the Oscar buzz but from what I have seen I would say The Dark Knight and Milk should get noms.

My Academy Award Best Picture guess would be between:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Revolutionary Road The Dark Knight Frost/Nixon Milk My Honorable mentions: Doubt (a sure win IMO for Streep and nominations for Hoffman, Adams and Viola Davis) Wall-E (best pic nom would be awesome but it'll win in the Best Animated category) Gran Torino (has a better chance than Eastwoods other release, "Changeling") Vicky Cristina Barcelona (IMO, a definite win for Penelope Cruz with her Supporting Actress Golden Globe nomination...she's such a scene stealer in the movie, excellent! but has competition between Viola Davis in this category) The Wrestler (no best picture nom but will be up for Best Actor Mickey Rourke and Supporting Actress for Marissa Tomei) Zac and Miri Make a Porno (should have had a Golden Globe nom for Best Picture musical/comedy and at least a nomination for Rogen and/or Banks they were really great in the movie!) Slumdog Millionaire (getting a lot of buzz and will continue to get recognition because of it's Golden Globe nomination) |

Wall-E is being campaigned for Best Picture.
Dark Knight(Warner's trying for the best actor. not sure about picture) Benjamin Button(It'd be a miracle. An Oscar movie that actually interests me). Those r my top 3. Last edited by ajmrowland; 12-24-2008 at 09:36 PM. |

I haven't seen all of the end-of-year releases geared to woo Oscar voters. Out of the new movies from 2008 I have seen I think Wall•E and The Dark Knight are both worthy of Best Picture Oscar nominations.
Since Pixar already dominates the Best Animated Feature category, I think Wall•E will just pick up that award and be cancelled out of Best Picture competition. Wall•E is also a very strong contender (almost a sure thing) to pick up the Best Sound and Best Sound Effects editing Oscars. The audio on this movie had a great deal to do with defining characters, thanks to the work of legendary sound designer Ben Burtt. That alone lifts Wall•E above the high octane bombast of well mixed action movies. Sometimes the Academy likes to throw the Best Sound Oscar to a high brow Best Picture candidate as an extra gimmie award, but I don't think they can pull that stunt with Wall•E as a choice. The Dark Knight stands a better chance of gaining nominations for Best Picture as well as Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Supporting Actor (Heath Ledger) and maybe even Best Original Screenplay for Jonathan Nolan & Christopher Nolan. I don't think the huge box office haul of money this picture took will hurt the chances of The Dark Knight winning either. Titanic helped break the stereotype of Oscar voters penalizing money making movies. LOTR: The Return of the King helped reinforce the notion that a major hit movie could score Oscar gold as well. In case anyone cares about the overall Best Picture Oscar situation -here's more thoughts on that situation. Sorry that it makes this post pretty long: Certain fall releases that seemed to have good odds of gaining Best Picture nominations, such as Changeling, Doubt and even The Curious Case of Benjamin Button are merely ranging in the 75% range at Rotten Tomatoes. That's not exactly a ground swell of critical raves and may not really be enough to justify any sort of Best Picture nomination, much less a win. Meanwhile, The Dark Knight did very well with critics, ending with a 94% Tomato-meter reading. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button may still score at least a few Oscar nominations since the movie still seems like the type of big yet prestigious period piece epic Oscar voters love to embrace from time to time. David Fincher, Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and a number of others attached to this project are veterans who have made Hollywood studios a good bit of money. Eventually that gets "noticed" in the form of awards. Politics does figure in with Oscar voting. There are other 2008 movies with stronger critical scores. Mickey Rourke's movie The Wrestler may end up with the best Tomato meter score for the year. It's currently at 98%. Rourke seems like a good bet for a Best Actor nomination at the very least. Slumdog Millionaire has already won a few critics association awards for Best Picture and seems certain to gain a Best Picture Oscar nomination. The movie has a 93% tomato-meter reading at Rotten Tomatoes. Milk is another fall release with a 93% tomato-meter reading. It's another one I think is certain to gain a Best Picture nomination, a Best Director nomination for Gus Van Sant and a Best Actor nomination for Sean Penn. A nomination for Penn will have some thinking about Tropic Thunder and the "never go full retard" actors ethic from I Am Sam. Frost/Nixon may also score some Oscar nominations. It has a 89% tomato-meter reading. A lot of Oscar buzz has built up regarding the performance of Frank Langella as Richard Nixon. |
