First 3 I would recommend:

The Dark Knight (imax shots are outstanding)
Cars (one of the best looking BDs i have ever seen)
Tropic Thunder (if you and your wife are into comedies)

Aiming for variety with my 3 selections. If i had to start over again my first 3 would be:

TDK, Cars and Ironman

Thanks for all the replies. Let me amend my original post by saying I'd like to impress her with the PQ and AQ, but still have a movie that she thinks is OK. So, don't go overboard with the soft stuff.

We rented TDK for DVD and she liked it. I think I saw Casino Royale without her in the theatre so that might be my first choice.

Some of the movies she would prefer probably don't lend themselves that well to BR...generic romantic comedies.

For the "general romantic comedy, I'd recommend What Happens in Vegas.

As far as what other movies to buy, pretty much ANY Disney movie (Pirates movies for sure), especially animated ones like Ratatouille and Cars. They look insanely incredible.

Out of curiosity, do you have a sound system that has HD sound? If yes, then some really good audio discs would be Master and Commander, The Incredible Hulk, the Narnia movies, Apocalypto, Enchanted, 3:10 to Yuma.

You can look through this list. It's a best rated by the Blu-ray.com reviewers. By all means, let us know which ones you decide on.

My receiver isn't capable of HD sound, but I ordered a panny 55, so I'll be using multichannel analog for lossless HD sound.

Awesome! What movies are you leaning towards? Sounds like Batman Begins? I would let you know that as a general rule, Warner Brothers releases are usually on the low end quality wise. They do have a few that are excellent, but it's usually the exception rather than the rule. I hope they turn things around.

I'm pretty much decided on getting Casino Royale as my first buy. After that I'm not sure...don't want to go too crazy too soon.

What do you recommend? Does Batman Begins' quality hold up?

Batman Begins IMO one of Warner's better discs. There are better, but if you love the movie, then then go for it. One thing I will say is Audio and Video quality won't make you too happy if you don't really like the movie .

You'll be very happy with Casino Royale. Even though it was one of the earlier releases, it really is a very quality transfer (and an awesome movie).

Not knowing what you both like/dislike I would say (in order of PQ/AQ) movies similar to the one's you've chosen:

Batman Begins:
Dark Knight of course (but you just saw this one)
Incredible Hulk
Hellboy I & II
Iron Man (personally wasn't too impressed with the audio)
Daredevil (directors cut)

Casino Royale:
This is a tougher movie to find like-type movies. The Bourne movies are yet to be releases on blu. I would say maybe Man on Fire. Does your wife have a favorite Actor maybe?

The Rock you get action your wife gets Sean Connery. It's a win win.
The Departed PCM
Haven't seen it on Blu Ray but Jerry Maguire

Do you have HDMI audio? If you the ability to play lossless or uncompressed audio do not forget to select it.

My girlfriend loved Wall-e, and it is a damn good Blu-Ray. Good mix of great visuals, occasional action scenes, a cute romance story, and a feel good ending.

There are many, many good choices. Your selection really depends upon her (and to a lesser extent yours, given your criteria) taste in movies.

If she enjoys animated movies then Wall-E & Kung Fu Panda are good choices.

Another good animated film (though very violent and gory at times) is Beowulf.

If she likes action moves, then Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are good.

For a documentary I'd go with Planet Earth or March of the Penguins.

For a romantic film I'm at a loss to suggest one here as it really isn't my genre. You might go with Pride and Prejudice but it's not coming to blu ray until March (the HD DVD version had excellent reviews).

For drama Into the Wild is very good.

For a unique film you might go with Lucky # Slevin...it's mystery, mob drama, comedy and romance rolled into one. (My wife and I really enjoyed it...just watched it over the weekend for the 3rd time). It stars Bruce Willis, Ben Kingsley, Lucy Liu and Morgan Freeman among others. Very nice soundtrack with it to that adds to the mood.

For classic film, there's the Godfather collection, Planet of the Apes box set (but you did say she didn't care for sci fi) and Casablanca.

If she's a fan of Celine Dion you may want to get her Vegas concert disk. I gave this one to my wife for Christmas and she loves it.

I'd highly recommend the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

The first movies I bought on blue were Planet Earth , and The Last Samurai. Planet Earth is going to win her over just because of the stunning visual on it. I dragged my better half to see The Last Samurai at the theaters, and she loved it, has a little of everything in that movie, romance, etc. and action for the guys. and a very well made movie, and the hillside scenes just stand out by how green the countryside is on blu.
