Typically, A German accent is used in film when a German is speaking English. Hense, the accent. This film takes place in Germany with Germans speaking thier native tongue in English. It works better this way. The audience will accept that they are speking German as they are actually listening to the diologue spoken in English.

If the actors in this film spoke with a German accent, it would seem silly and rediculous to the audience. Confused yet?

It always bugged the crap out of me when they would have foreign characters who would actually be speaking in a foreign language speak in English with a foreign accent. You want realism, have Mr. Cruise sprechen Deutsch, don't have him speak English with a German accent. A German person speaking English with a German accent in Germany is NOT more realistic; in fact, it's less realistic.

Quote:
Big case in point...Costner as Robin of Locksley in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Though he started out with a little British accent....lost when he actually got to the shores of England.
This is not the same thing. A person speaking English with a British accent is how they actually speak in Great Britain. In Russia, they don't walk around speaking perfect English with Russian accents layed on thick to "sell" their nationality. They speak Russian. In England, they speak English. English with an accent is still the same language as English without an accent.

But, no, seriously, GORT, I agree - they weren't trying to make a historical pic for buffs like myself but turning a point in time into a hollywood movie.
Hey I saw that !!!

I agree with Bryan Singer. IF anybody want more accent authenticity, wait for the BD release with a German dub track; you get the actual language but not done by the actors.

I mentioned this before and I'll say it again; I don't remember seeing any complaints about Sean Connery not having a Russian accent in Red October, or Anthony Hopkins in The Mask of Zorro, or Charlton Heston in Ben-Hur, or Liam Neeson in Schindler's List, or Russell Crowe in Gladiator, or any of the characters in Amadeus, or Casablanca, or Spartacus, etc, etc, etc the list goes on and on and on.

This is nothing new, but do people hate Cruise so much that they'll look for any little reason to dog him, and then act like no other actor or movie has avoided using accents?

+1
There are very few movies where German/Russian characters have their respective accents. Most of the time they have british ones!! So everyone complaining here is full of hot air.

In this movie the characters are supposed to be speaking fluent German. So either they all speak fluent German throughout the movie, or they all speak perfect english and avoid the use of subtitles. Either way, it only makes sense for them to speak WITHOUT an accent.

It's not confusing at all.

Just imagine your know German and understood it just fine. That's what is taking place here. It's just done in English

Yeah I noticed that too, haha.
But I accepted it 20 minutes into the film.

And I LOVED IT.

I don't get what the big deal is either. This is an American made movie for English speaking audiences. Of course it was filmed in English. The characters are speaking in German. We're essentially watching the English dub as performed by the actual actors (with zero lip sych problems!). Accents would be pointless.

Actually going into this movie I was expecting to be extremely annoyed by this. BUT the way they pulled this off is perfect IMO. The movie starts with Tom Cruise writing a letter in German. And you hear his thoughts while he's writing the letter. Which is actually him speaking in German with an accent. Then it slowly fades out into English. So that way you can (as the audience) understand him. So its like the characters are technically speaking German through the whole film.

Default Stop bashing Singer ...

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I plan to tomorrow evening. However, I have no reason to think that it won't be a great movie based on the past performances of all involved. I can't stand all these people who bash Singer and/or Cruise for no reason other than jealousy. They didn't get to where they are by accident. If you don't like the movies being put out then go do something about it. Write a movie worth a studio looking at. Direct. Produce. Do something besides complain on a message board about somebody who went out and put himself in the position to make movies.
