The way I look at it, tv shows won't benefit from hi-def PQ and sound to the same extent that films will. Therefore, I'm happy to continue buying tv shows on dvd, while leave films for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Would Seinfeld be any funnier in hi-def? obviously not. But I can imagine the Matrix films, or Aliens, Lord of the Rings etc looking amazing. Personally I'm looking forward to sports, well football in hi-def, (soccer to the Yanks). When the camara pans out on sd tv broadcasts, the resoltution isn't high enough and the picture looks poor.

Apparantly ESPN will be broadcasting in 1080p60 this year. I would love to see soccer in this resolution. Far better than 575i 50.

As far as tv shows on HD I agree for the most part. Though I'm sure some might have been done in HD originally. Like those from HBO. We are getting the S1 of Sopranos as a part of the first wave of HDDVD titles. Would it benefit as much as film? Probably not. But on the other hand if you had the choice...why not? Glad I haven't bought any of the Soprano's or any other HBO box sets yet on DVD.

1080p60 already?? WOW! Now all we need is for the manufacturers to hurry and bombard us with 1080p tvs. And at "reasonable" prices by the time we do get HDDVD/Bluray software/hardware. As I mentioned, Samsung is to put out a 61" xHD3 chipped DLP-rptv in a few months. But at $6500 USD list. OUCH! Hoever, it shouldn't be long before other manufacturers introduce theirs starting a price/feature war.

I still am very surprised neither the HDDVD camp or the BR camp have released "confirmed" specs for their software and hardware as of yet. Yes I am overly anxious! Hehe!! Perhaps we'll hear something in a month or two.

later guys.

Apparantly the Sopranos is filmed in hi-def already. Not sure whether it was from the start or not though. Would love the Sopranos in hi-def, (if I didn't already own the first 4 seasons on box set), but a lot of UK tv shows weren't filmed this way. Also, UK tv shows don't have the huge budgets USA shows have.

As for tvs, it seems to me that prices are falling at an incredible rate. i.e. my LCD tv that retailed for £2,000 just over 6 months ago, can now be bought for just £800. The only 1080p tv at the moment is Sharp's 45" lcd that has a RRP of £6,500, but is already £5,000 bought off the internet. It won't take long before competition lknocks this down further.

Sopranos has been shown on HBO in HD & 5.1 from the very first episode. Lots of American shows are filmed in HD over the last 2-3 seasons. Practically the only U.S. series that aren't in HD now are the reality shows and news shows. Most of the primetime lineup is in HD and would indeed benefit from a Blu-ray or HD-DVD release.

Hiya Rob,

A friend of mine lost his mind and bought that Sharp 46" 1080p LCD-rptv. Actually he's an "acquainence". Can't picture myself spending up to 8k USD for a 46" rptv...1080p native or not. That's how much he ended up paying after taxes. For 8k USD you could buy yourself a nice 720p native DLP projector and 118" Stewart screen!! Plus, towards the end of the year we're supposed to get the HD4 chip DLP projectors which are supposed to do 1080p native.

But for us mortals I'd like to see 1080p RPTVs drop in price to around the 4k USD mark before I consider one. And assuming I can't wait to own a HDDVD/Bluray player/movies then I'll probably make do with a 720p projector and have it downconvert.

As I mentioned a few times already Samsung is said to be coming out with a 61" xHD3 chipped DLP rptv in March. Debuting with a list price of $6500 USD...which I suspect will drop by at least $1500 USD within this year. Street price. Making it more attractive. And I'm sure other manufacturers will also be releasing their xHD3 RPTVs too soon (e.g. Pansonic, Toshiba...etc.).

Wished the BR group would hurry and put out an impressive list of titles! COME ON GUYS!!

Hey there DarkDTSes, would be interested to know what the model is, and what the PQ is like.

This is the 45" Sharp lcd I was thinking off. Flat panel, 1920 by 1080p:

http://www.sharp.co.uk/titanium

About £5k in the UK if bought online, (rrp 6,500). Personally I won't be buying a 1080p set until they're under the £2,000 price range. Whcih isn't all that unreasonable when you consider that 4 years ago a Phillips 42" 480p plasma and stand was £7,500, but now 42" plasmas can be picked up for £1,000-2,000. Having only just bought a new lcd 6 months ago, I'm happy to wait up to 5 years before I replace it.

Hello Rob,

I don't know exactly which model he bought. I thought there was only 1 45" LCD Widescreen but I just checked. And there are 3 (http://www.sharpusa.com/products/Typ...56,s67,00.html). Not sure what the differences are. I just know I'm definitely never going to spend almost 8k USD on a 45" TV.

As I said Samsung is going to put out a 61" xHD3 DLP rptv in March. I'd at elast want a 61". And hopefully after 2 years (which is roughly the time frame I'm thinking about before I plan to buy a new HDTV and HDDVD/Bluray player) the $6500 USD list price will have dropped to around $3500 USD at least.

Though, being that Samsung is going to give us a $450 Bluray drive at the end of the year...I could enjoy Bluray on my PC. I wonder if there will also be a HDDVD drive put out at the same time too...Hmmm...

Still no list of BR titles

Have a good week!
