Also can you get these lights in Canada anywhere?? Thanks
The light needs to be behind the screen to provide separation (or the perception thereof) between the screen and the wall behind it. In your setup, if you put lights behind the credenza, the light is bound to spill over onto the front of your screen--definitely not the effect you want.

Quote from Cinemaquest site:
Ambient lighting should be of the correct color, as close as possible to CIE D65 (D6500 Kelvins). This specification for white light is more toward the blue end of the visual spectrum, to simulate average north sky daylight at midday. D65 is the reference white point used in correctly calibrated video displays. Typical residential incandescent lighting is much more yellow/red in spectrum and will skew or distort human color perception in a video viewing environment. The most common source for D6500K lighting is full-spectrum fluorescent lamps.
In short, if you want correct color reproduction you have to use 6500k lighting (or nothing at all).

But another question would be, is your tv calibrated to display white at 6500k?

Try CYRON.com/ or IKEA dioder lights. You just double faced tape them on the back edges (The IKEA'S), or they come with clips! The cyron lights also swivel,so you can aim them where you want them.

Cyron lights $79.95-$179.95(different packages).....or.....Ikea's dioder Led's $49.99.

i have the dioder led's from ikea and can say they are really good, they definately ease eye strain when watching and look really good, also can change 7 different colors, i like to change the colors with different genres of films, and virtually heat free as i have run them all night before, will try to post some pics.

I would love to see some pics showing the effect it gives and also how you mounted them! Might have to run to my local Burlington Ikea to get some.

sorry john but my camera crapped out a month or so ago, but mounting them i used the padded sticky tape that comes with the led's and put one on each side and 1 on top and bottom, looks really cool to me, and they cost 79 bucks plus tax.

Anyway - was curious how people have mounted lights behind their sets. I can certainly velcro it to the TV, which seems like the best choice at this point, but curious what others have done.

thanks in advance.

Here's what I have:

It's the ideal lume standard...
those are the same lights i used on my set, however my tv is not mounted so i did use velcro. I will post some pics when i get home later today....

Ive have seen alot of people use Ikea's Dioder Lighting Strips multicolored....

They are a little prices and I think there are better deals to find on ebay or else where.... but these are pretty much what your looking for.

http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/store...s&query=DIODER

If you have an IR universal remote (with the switch in sight)... You can also turn them on off by remote.

Philips has the propietary (proprietary? Sheesh) Ambilight feature, but the trade-off is you don't have black levels, you have 'gray levels' - and there are those who say that any light color besides 6500K white is a bad idea. But I can't live without it now.

...until I get a TV with black levels that are actually...black levels.

LED LCD or Pio plasma baby.

Oh, and don't forget the legendary Sony XBR960 with SFP (super-fine-pitch). It has been regarded as the best 34" TV in the world. I owned the XBR970 (non-SFP), but sold due to it's physical size (200lbs), but I now severely regret it.

Default Ambient background bias lighting - does it make a difference?

For those of you with some sort of background light behind your tv, I am curious to know if you feel it made a difference in viewing satisfaction?

I have a 50" Panasonic Plasma (1080P) and am considering one of these: http://www.cinemaquestinc.com/ideal_lumesb.htm

Before I jump in and buy sometihing like this, I want to know what others think.

I am in the UK and have a Pioneer 507XD the last before the Kuro's. It does not have the best blacks in the world in a dark environment, however with a back light, an uplighter in my case the blacks become much better.
In any case watching in complete darkness is not always the best idea. All Plasma's blacks glow a little in total darkness, maybe Kuro's are an exception.

That's exactly how I feel, although I know the black level is the same the blacks do look better with the lights on, and I mean the your actual living room light not backlighting, blacks still don't look better even with my backlight I have for my t.v., but I still watch all my movies in pure darkness with my backlight on.

It depends on the luminence of peak white on your display. If you have it calibrated properly for a batcave environment, backlighting probably isn't necessary. At this moment, the peak luminence of set is around 60fL, which makes a bias light essential, but it's great for daytime viewing. When I calibrated to 40fL, I felt there was too much loss of detail in shadows. My preference. I use a cheap fluorescent tube and ballast behind my set, and I have a gray wall. It's probably not 6500K (though you can find 6500K tubes for indoor gardening), and George from Cinemaquest will argue that it's not correct (he has a thread at AVS in the display calibration forum) but the examples that are given on the Cinemaquest site about environment effecting image perception are extreme, if you have seen them. If your backlight is neutral and of appropriate brightness, things should be improved. They won't be up to standard, but better. I don't live in a lab, so lots of things aren't standard.
