In December 2009 I wrote an e-mail to Animeigo and complemented them on the fantastic DVD releases of the Lone Wolf & Cub series. I also asked about Blu-ray releases, and here's what they said:

We intend to start BluRay releasing next year, and LW&C is high on our list, but we are not ready to announce specifics yet.

Our tradition in the past has been to do a trade-in program so people who bought on a previous format can upgrade at a lower cost.

best,R

From Animeigo.com

" Coming in July -- Shogun Assassin on Blu-Ray!
AnimEigo is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the legendary samurai cult classic Shogun Assassin by releasing the first ever high-definition version of the film! The most famous samurai film in the Western World is finally coming to North America in the clearest and most pristine version ever seen by man, woman, or ninja.

In 2006, our first official release of Shogun Assassin set the bar for high quality with its crystal-clear DVD picture. This time around, we once again reconstructed the film, this time using uncompressed 1080p 24p source materials.

But that's not all! For this special edition of samurai slaughter, we've compiled some incredible exclusive extras! For starters, there's a must-see 10+ minute interview with Samuel L. Jackson about his fondness of Shogun Assassin and other samurai films, shot exclusively for this release in 2009. And to top it all off, we gathered three of the original cast and crew for a brand new, highly-informative, feature-length audio commentary. This new commentary features never-before-heard insider perspectives of the 1980 film's creation from some of the key players who made it all happen: Producer David Weisman, Illustrator Jim Evans, and Gibran Evans, the iconic voice of Daigoro!

See the most famous Samurai movie of all time–that the Japanese have still never heard of!

See the movie that you've watched a million times, but never really seen -- because you've never seen it in 1080p!

It's the one... the only... Shogun Assassin in High Definition!

Because the best color for blood… is Blu!"

There is no mention of sound quality; thus, they might give us a lossy mix. I hope not though.

I'd much rather upgrade on the Lone Wolf & Cub series DVD's then get Shogun Assassin. Great series of films.

I agree. Even though it's tempting to buy Shogun Assassin on Blu-ray, I guess I'll be waiting for the Lone Wolf & Cub series. Shogun is just a cut together movie of the first two Lone Wolf movies, and even though it's gory and entertaining as hell, It's kind of pointless...

I saw Shogun Assassin in the theater when I was a kid so I have a fondness for this movie. I can't wait to see what the PQ looks like.

It's nice to see that AnimEigo is showing some respect to the Lone Wolf and Cub movies. They've actually carved out a spot for themselves in the Niche Market by releasing these samurai movies ... and they've managed to continue to survive on them.

Why would anyone want an edited movie? Just buy the individual movies

Is this movie known to be acceptably watched dubbed in English? For example, since this famous movie is a "Western" version (combining of the two Japanese films), is it known to be dubbed and accepted to watch dubbed? And anyway how is the dubbing and does anyone know the audio specs on this?

haven't been able to sit down and watch this but we have it... started it and then ended up having to go somewhere before we got into the film lol..

its a fondness for us because myself i remember watching it in theaters as well. Jen said she didn't see it till it was released a few years later on cable and video haha.

didn't seem to have a lossless audio so sorry to see that and the picture looked bout the same as the dvd. will double check over the weekend when we get some free time.

The dubbing is very good considering the changes in the story that were made to the western version. The Lone Wolf series is in Japanese and is a bit more intense than Shogun Assassin. Both are top notch DVD transfers. I've got both the Shogun Assassin series and Lone Wolf and Cub, still watch them every few months.
