I watched it. I liked it pretty well. Looked it up at Rotten Tomatoes

Oh well, don't tell anyone I liked it okay?

Saw this quote just now...

Did they not use the same or virtually the same audio track on the DVD and the Blu-ray? Visually it was great, but I only got it because it was in the 5 free deal, I would not pay for it without lossless audio. It's a MUSICAL!!!! So why are the emphasizing the visual instead of the audio?

Hopefully we get a better release in the future. Until then, don't both buying it unless it's really cheap...

You can also considering importing the film from Japan I believe. Isn't that a lossless audio track?

In terms of the film, I think it's awesome. It's not the greatest translation to film because it still maintains a very STAGED feel to it and I feel like that keeps you from judging it as solely a movie, but it's definitely worth a viewing. You probably have to see it twice or so to learn to like it. I find most musicals to be an adapted taste.

Unless of course you've seen the stage version and know it very well and just happen to fall in love with the movie version due to perfect casting/direction and dream every night about it coming out on blu-ray despite the fact that it's master studio releases on HD-DVD........

Have i ever mentioned on these boards how much I want Sweeney Todd on Blu-ray?

Phantom was my first blu-ray.

Me and my wife have seen the theatre / stage version and yet we still LOVE the movie, the songs, the cast plus all the extras on the disc.

I thought I would open this thread today after discovering some info you might be interested in. The Japanese version of the Phantom of the Opera disc has an English Dolby True HD track AND an English 5.1 PCM track, so for those like me who want this soundtrack in all its glory, it is available from Amazon Japan and Yes Asia (cheaper at Amazon actually). The Yes Asia site shows Dolby True and PCM, and I language-converted the specs and they are both English tracks.

Disc size: 48,019,850,832

Well, those specs certainly would be, especially the soundtrack, the US release, PCM at 4.6 mbps, that's got to sound a heck of a lot better than Dolby Digital 640kbps.

Stage is stage film is film. No film is ever like the stage production unless they filmed the stage production. But if your a Phantom fan go for it.

[QUOTE=BStecke;419743]"The Guy" is none other than King Leonidas himself, Gerard Butler. And no, he can't sing. I also thought he was a bit too young for the part.

Wow! You're right! It was King Leonidas! I had no idea...I forgive him now b/c I also thought his singing sucked.

Hi I watched the movie and the documentary, seems all the actor/actress have to sing for themselves, including Gerard Butler. Maybe I'm wrong?

Everybody sang their own part except Minnie Driver.

Too bad they didn't do the dub job on Butler. Would've made for a much better movie.

Butler's singing was actually painful.

Does anyone posting here have the Japanese version? If so, how is it? I will assume the soundtrack is quite a bit better not being compressed.

Just got it the other day, haven't sat down and watched the whole thing, but a quick comparision to the WB release showed a measure of improvement. The bitrates on this fluctuates between 30 and 40 and is an avc encode.

I'm pretty sure the beginning of the movie is always going to look bad because of how heavily they processed it, director's decision.

Once I watch the full thing through I will give a better assesment of this disc in comparison to the wb one.

P.S> Japan passed a law that requires expedited shipping on all international purchases. Meaning a charge of some $20 bucks to ship. On a positive note I did get it in just two days.
