Dam Itunes just erased half of my Ipod for no reason

Most of the time, stores don't have that great of a selection or even some of the music that I'm looking for. And then, sometimes it easier to get it on iTunes than to go looking for it in stores or order it. Not to mention, sometimes you only want a song or two. But on a side note, I still buy CDs and records.

Back to the topic, Alway backup your hard drive periodically.
