I'm not trying to stir this pot (I see some posts have already disappeared), but I must respectfully disagree. The listening area is not large enough where you can move the mic more than a few inches and still be inside it. It's basically the "box" of space your head occupies while you're sitting watching the movie. This is where you're supposed to position your mic for an Audyssey setup. If you move the mic 2 or 3 feet then you're well outside the listening area, and therefore the distance settings measured by Audyssey will be incorrect, which will in turn cause the timing to be off in the listening area. It may or may not be off enough to make a significant difference in the listening area. If you want any of your speakers to be louder, why not just turn up those specific speakers to your liking? At least this way the distance settings in your receiver will still be correct.

One of the most important things that Audyssey does is measuring speaker distances from your listening positions so that it knows how much delay to impart to each speaker. This is what allows the effect of hearing that jet plane fly smoothly and with continuity from the left rear corner of your room to the front right corner. If Audyssey is not given the correct listening positions... then the delays will not be precise... and the surround sound effect won't be as precise as intended.
Exactly. If you move your mic outside of where you sit, you're introducing potential audio lag, perceived distortion, and muddy sound due to room acoustics. If you do this, there's no point in even running Audyssey.

Let us know how it works out.

OK I'm not trying to argue here, just honestly to understand, cuz right now this isn't making sense to me. If my head (and ears) is in a space that's a little smaller than one cubic foot, and I move the mic so it's taking measurements from 3 feet away, then how is that supposed to be calibrated properly back in the space where my ears will be when I listen? It sounds like you're saying you can get a proper calibration with the mic somehwere other than where your ears are going to be.

Fireman it's the same thing that Robin and I have been asking as well.

Outside of where you sit? your suppose to move the mic to mutilple positions to get a good calibration.

Yes.... but they are all locations where you actually sit.... and specific points in the sound field as well. When Audyssey is asking for the center, it means the very center seat of your listening area.... at listening height. Then it asks for the far left position and the far right positon. This determines the exact parameters of the sound field that Audyssey is trying to accomodate... and will make adjustments to provide the best experience for the whole defined area with an emphasis on the center. Higher end Audyssey versions also include postions in the front and rear for multi-row seating.

Thats EXACTLY what i was talking about! i knew all of you didn't understand me.

move the mic back a bit from where you sit (the first position) its almost the same as sitting in another location. do that within the audyssey bubble.

Except for that Audyssey will now think it's trying to accomodate a listening area that is shaped like a wide V? Which I guess would be fine if that were the actual shape of your listening area.

No rob no V, i didn't that far back. just 1 to 2 feet and it will still be in that circle. besides it all depeds how big your HT room is anyway, and obviously dont go pass the surrounds. i moved mine back about 2 feet from where i originaly had it. but its still in that bubble from where i sit.

You dont have to do this, just turn the levels up in the receiver if you think its to low. i was just telling the OP the way audyssey works and how it does its levels......the first position of where you sit.

I was not talking to you. I was talking to everybody. Too many posts by different people were deleted by other moderators.

You should never explain yourself by calling names, it is not needed and won't be tolerated.
