I personally hate that term as all movies are "art films" and, also, like a film trying to say or be something more than just a paper-thin narrative filled with CGI is a bad thing?

Good to see Michael Shannon finally an Oscar nominee - an exceedingly-underrated (or-unappreciated ) actor who deserves to be a household name already.

On a side note, sad to see "Let the Right One In" not getting a nomination in the 'Best Foreign Film' category. Granted, I don't think it's a 100%-homerun but it certainly deserves recognition for what it does hit right.

Why the Gus Van Sant omission for "Milk," though?

Not saying that art or independent films arent good, its just how many people really get to see these films. I live by a close city of over 600.000 people and we have one theatre that airs those films and they dont all ways get all those films. And the bidder theatre chains dont even bother with smaller films. I just think the oscars need to shack things up and maybe redo some things. And plus alot of people to go theatres anymore for prices of tickets and pop/snakcs and gas. I know these films from watching At the Movies, but alot of people dont.

i just think for a film that got nominated in pretty much every technical category, that there wasnt a director or film nomination for TDK is astounding

I just don't think that the Academy should have to restructure their standards to small-town america.

I would say that Doubt getting shut out for best picture is MORE astounding: several actor nominations AND screenplay but not picture?!?

Bit of sad trivia: today marks the one-year-anniversery of Heath Ledger's death -- his Oscar nomination has been announced on the same day as his passing.

Suprised at RDJ for Tropic Thunder. I loved the movie, but no way I thought he would go so far as to get an Oscar nod for that. Just wow. No chance he's winning, but still impressive.

We've been reporting that all morning. You know what's worse? They still haven't rented out the apartment. The owner is losing about 26k a month in rent. It's sitting there empty.

So happy to see Heath got the nomination, now hopefully he gets it. Great to see Rourke getting the nom as well.

It would have been perfect TDK recieved a nom for best picture and director but I'm happy to see what it got for noms.

Wall*E takes five nominations, and will have a fight on its hands with The Dark Knight in the sound categories.

The screenplay nomination for Wall*E is Pixar's fifth after Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. It is only the sixth animated film to earn a nomination for original screenplay. Wall*E is also one of the few animated films to earn a nod in the sound categories after Bambi, Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. The only animated film to win in the sound categories is The Incredibles (Fantasia earned a special oscar for the Fantasound system).
