well the best movie experiences i've had have both been in Edmonton, Alberta... one at the IMAX theater in the west edmonton mall (it was as beautiful to me as the first time I saw blu-ray on an 80 inch screen) and the other at a smaller theater with a more "theatrical layout" in which the seats were actually about a foot and a half higher every row up, making for a comfortable height above the person in front of you, and the projection was solid enough that if I had taken a picture of it, you would swear it was a television and not a lousy theatre projector

sadly all my local theatres half-a$$ it every time and you get out of focus projection at the new ones, better projection but horrible seating at the older ones

its never gonna make it, no one is gonna pay that. Blu ray is here to stay until digital downloads take over in a few years.

Yeah read that before.

Optware planned to release a 200 GB disc in early June 2006, and Maxell planned one for September 2006 with a capacity of 300 GB and transfer rate of 20 MB/s[2] -- although HVD standards were approved and published on June 28, 2007, neither company has released an HVD as of January, 2009
Almost 3 years and no disc released yet. I'd say HVD is nothing for BD fans to worry about any time soon.

I doubt digital downloads will take over within the next decade. Hopefully never, I personally don't feel like storing my entire movie collection on a hard drive the losing it all when it crashes. And not to mention ISP bandwidth caps, the amount of time to download... imagine trying to dl a BD size movie. Nah, I'd rather take my cash to a store and buy the movie... then sit it on my shelving to show off. Showing off a hard drive wouldn't be very exciting

I have to agree with the majority here.

I really don't see HVD going mass market to the consumer or upending Blu-ray. BD has now been enbraced by the consumer and BD is here to stay for at least 10+15 years.

After that, then maybe HVD will have a shot, but not until then.

Bah, I can't tell the difference between upconverting my Blu-ray and the HVD.

One thing people are forgetting......

So far HVD is vaporware. BD is here.

Just something to think about. It's no different from the triple layer HD DVD.

In all honesty I think Holographic discs are a tiny (and by a tiny I mean I whole hell of a lot) better than triple layered HD-DVD's.
But Bluray is too far in to be ditched now, it will live an entire cycle first which means that Blu will be around for the next 10 to 15 years, then yeah, it will be replaced by HDV or whatever else the powers that be, decide.

LOL! I agree and you said the same thing I did earlier in the thread.

The people have voted with their wallets. BD is here to stay. A few items to mention are...

1. The Blu-ray format has not yet come anywhere close to it's peak. It's still new technology that's constantly evolving.

2. Supposedly TDK or someother brand is already developing/developed a 100GB + Blu-ray Disc. Given the relative age of BD and this possible development, gives me high hopes for the longevity of the format.

Talk about HVD has been around since before Blu-ray started to get big.
I don't think this will go anywhere for at least another 3 years. There have been a lot of issues and as you can see the prices are way out there. Until they get big time support from a leading company who is willing to shell out some bucks to put its name on this, prices will not change.

Now 3.9 TB might be a good follow up to HDD!? Only if they make them super scratch resistant though.

But as far as movie go... I don't think we have to worry about that.

HVD is not going to be a consumer format in our lifetime.

$20,000 per reader and $500 per disc, and no method of writing proposed...
