I can't stand the direction he has gone in and believe he is MILKING the Star Wars thing to death since he is scared to try anything new.....BUT.......

The guy has skills, he just forgot how to use them properly.

Lucas has really tarnished his own legacy. He started out with a great idea with the SW trilogy but something happened along the way.

Actually, things started to turn in Return of the Jedi with the Ewoks and all the screen time they got dancing around and Chewbacca making the Tarzan noise when he swung onto the AT-ST. That's where all that cutsey, childish stuff began and it carried over to Jar Jar Binks. For whatever reason, he seems to love comic relief and bumbling sidekicks a little too much.

Funny thing is, is that Empire Strikes Back is the best of the SW legacy and Lucas didn't even direct it. Chew on that one.

Lucas did a fine job with the original STAR WARS but I haven't cared for his other work. His major fault is that he's not an "actor's" director--there
is rarely a good performance under his direction and the emotional aspect
(something that Spielberg excels in) is completely lacking. He also has poor
judgment on juvenile dialogue ("laserbrain", "nerfherder" and other
groaners-- yes I know that's the script but the director can override and
change dialogue)

I apparantly was one of the few that thought REVENGE OF THE SITH
was outstanding-- the best sequel-prequel of the series along with
EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. What made that film so great was the emotional
angle in the film--there was a rumor that James Cameron directed a good deal of that movie and I would be inclined to believe it because the
film did not "feel" like a Lucas effort at all....

um, he's DEFINITELY not a hack. he came up with arguably one of the best science fiction/adventure/what have you stories ever known in the history of cinema. i'm sorry, but that's absolutely ridiculous if you call a guy a hack when he created a trilogy of movies (ignoring the prequels) that basically became a religion, helped redefine visual effects, and spawned a greater following than almost any other movie in the last 40 years. yes he milks his movies for all they're worth, no i wasn't a fan of the prequels, but i can still respect a man who largely helped improve and redefine cinema.

Rich
Uwe Boll is directing 5 movies coming out in 2009, and has another 14 directing credits on his resume. So does that mean he's not a hack either?

i dont think that was Rich's point. he wasn't just saying lucas had a gazillion films to credit, but more specifically with all of THESE films to his credit i.e. emphasis on the films themselves. someone responsible for both star wars and indiana jones is not a hack, imo.

True. I don't think he's a hack either, but I don't think that list it the way to prove it. Yes, Indiana Jones and Star Wars are great, and I like American Graffiti as well.

But I can't give a guy credit for a movie just because he was the Executive Producer, unless I know he actually played a huge role in making the movie what it was, so that rules out a few on the list.

And for each good movie, Lucas seems to have a bad one to go with it. Episodes 1, 2, 3 aren't horrible, but I think they'll always ruin 4, 5, and 6 a little bit. And Howard the Duck... well, yeah. I just hope he threw money at that, and otherwise had nothing to do with it.

Someone responsible for 1, 2 and 3 is a hack. He likes to milk his movies for as much as he can. I used to respect him a great deal but now I don't. He has gone down hill and fast.

executive producers generally play very large roles in a movie, not to mention bringing in lots of money on the film's behalf. and if you're referring to indiana jones, george didn't just EP, he wrote the stories can't vouch for the others though (i haven't even heard of half of them )

i personally dont think its fair to ignore someones past work and only use their most current work as a basis for calling them a hack. if you're going to give him credit (or discredit) for his newer star wars movies, you should give him credit for what he once did too. true, the original star wars don't automatically take the place of any of his future movies that might be considered "crap," but it also doesn't mean they should be ignored for what they once (and still) were. star wars and indiana jones still existed and are known as some of the finest trilogies in cinema. old george may have gone downhill since the original jones and star wars movies, but imo he's not far enough down to deserve being titled a hack. agree to disagree though
