I'm still hoping we get a Special Edition or something.
I love this film.

I'm hopeful it gets a Criterion release within the next ten years.

I noticed on caps-a-holic that the US release seems to be open-matted to 1.78:1. The UK and German releases are 1.85:1. Quite interesting.

There isn't much difference between 1.78 and 1.85, you see a sliver bit more picture information.

A 2-disc Criterion edition would be incredible.

Disc 1: Theatrical Cut

Disc 2: Redux

"December 10, 2008

We spoke briefly with Aronofsky today in Beverly Hills and had to ask him about the rumor from MTV that said he was re-cutting The Fountain, which is my very favorite Aronofsky movie to date. "I'm not re-cutting it, I'm doing a bit of -- I'd call it more of a redux -- well, I don't even know what that word means for goodness sake," Aronofsky said. So what exactly is he doing if not necessarily a director's cut?

"It's something more for fans. I worked on the film for 6 years and it went through a lot of versions. And there was one version that was much closer to one of the scripts that we had. And we kind of chose between which way we would go with it and they both are kind of interesting. So I was always curious for myself to see what that alternative version would be. And we cut it actually recently, it's done. I would have to get Warner Brothers to support it and get it out there." Unfortunately, since the film fell between the cracks during its original theatrical release in late 2006 (it only made a depressing $10 million at the box office), I imagine that Warner Brothers is very skeptical of ever touching the project again.

Aronofsky did say that, "at some point, hopefully, there'll be enough of a demand that they'll let me go in and do it. But we got to get there." And if you're still a bit confused by this alternate version, you're not alone, as I am, too. And to make it all a bit worse, Aronofsky added this: "It's very similar but it's looking at a few things in a few different ways and answers a few questions for people and raises some new questions in other ways." In the MTV article, he did mention that it would contain "unused footage from the first go-round" and be a "complicated project on a couple of levels." "

Been thinking about The Fountain a lot lately. I'd really love a special edition bluray, from Criterion or otherwise. (I am partial to Criterion, though.)

The DE disc is still way to go. It has the proper AR and lossless audio.

What is the improper AR? Which version is on the DVD?

Not sure on the DVD. The US BD is 1.78:1 instead of 1.85:1 and has lossy audio.

So does the UK though. And it has a better bitrate. I own both, but haven't had a chance to watch the DE yet. Is there any other significant difference? The difference in the caps is subtle.

Yes: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=27...0&a=1&go=0&l=1 The UK disc has oversaturated colors and struggles with compression due to MPEG-2 instead of AVC. Notice how Weisz's eyes are hazel instead of green for example.

However, the UK release does have more extras and English subs.

The most touching ending of any movie I've seen, ever probably. Only The Green Mile comes close in terms of tears.

Looks to me like the German Blu Ray has a green push, while the UK one has a red push. I think I prefer the UK one but it's not a huge deal for me.

The better compression handling of the German release does sound tempting though, on my last watch of the film I did notice a few problematic compression moments.

Thanks! I always liked the DE caps a bit better, which is why I eventually picked it up, but then I started having some buyer's remorse. I'll have to give it a watch soon, but next in line for Aronofsky is Noah in 3D (another one I've been hoping isn't a throw-away buy).

According to dvdcompare it's the DE one that has more extras.

I love Darren Aranofsky, but I’m not sure if Criterion would pick up a film with a 52% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Black Swan would probably be more likely.
