Well, anyone who knows Moore's Law knows that technology advances exponentially, not linearly. So new audio/video technology will be upon us alot quicker than we think. It will probably be wireless streaming of holographic projections in full audio/video surround. The home computer, telephone and television will all be seamlessly integrated together. That is something really cool to think about though...Princess Leia really would be in our living rooms saying "Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope" Then again, the world could end in 2012, so what do I know

It should be the last physical media, not the last way to view home video. I'm in the business and the writing is on the wall. I'll give it another 6-8 years and after that it should all be downloadable content from then on.

There's always something bigger and better in the works. Digital downloads will never take over until we have the same picture and sound quality as blu-ray and download speeds reach Gb/sec rates.

if that is the case then we're all in for a nasty ride. when everything is now on the internet we are going to be sitting ducks. and don't think we won't be thrown several, several centuries when it's all said and done. cause we will. don't put all your eggs in one basket, as they say.

I sure hope it's not the last. Nothing worst for human nature then to stop looking head. The fact that we are always thinking of new things (good or bad) as made us what we are. The day we stop thinking, the day we become mentaly lazy, well anyone seen Wall-E?

I am looking forward to a great run for BD but I know something else is coming along just around the corner and I will be there to enjoy it I hope

There will be something else there is always something else. I hope this last's a decent amount of time though it has so much untapped potential. So for now blu-ray is the shit!

Default Blu will be around till the next storage device,

Lone Wolf8 quotes:

Most females are only grugingly accepting the 40 to 50 or so inch screens as it is. That type of feeling might change in the fairer sex in ten years or so, but I somehow doubt it.
I'm single, so I buy what I want, when I want it and can afford it. Most of my friends and work collegues have to knuckle under to their wives and girlfriends. A lot of the guys I know who haven't progressed to HD blame their reluctant mates for it. "She won't let me." or: "She says she can't tell the difference from regular DVDs" to: She doesn't want to get a larger TV, cause it won't fit in the entertainment center."
Sheesh!

First off - things have already changed.

These guys u know who knuckle under the "wifey" or girlfriend have issues because if thats what someone really likes - ie: a hobby like having a kick ass HT system setup and its not effecting the family budget then why not ?

I mean if its say the guys salary that carries the house and everything else in it - I dont see a problem. If its a joint salary well I still dont see a probelm either. Unless that is he's asking her to purchase the setup with her own $$$

Honestly does it really matter if she cant tell the diff between HD and DVD ?

Its not then her frikn hobby if she cant differenciate.

OK - having said that I can also say that your timeline is way off as far as the fairer sex will get with the times in 10 years.

Women have been purchasing these items along with the Lexus and 500g condos. Case in point my "girl"friend apart from the aforementioned bling has also a 1st gen. Sony plasma long before anyone heard of an inexpensive plasma. ANd its not even that big 32" She purchased it when 36" CRTs were still cool.

If you also look at my sig, it says I have a 62" DLP - that btw was purchased by my wife. NOT me. Mind you Ive furnished other parts of the house with a 30" 40" and a 50" LCDs.

As far as storage - Netflick or a version of that( hi-SPeed d/ing)will be around sooner than later. When the new internet becomes commercial( fibre optic lines) encrypted BLU-R Movies will be in your HD in under 3mins.

I believe the downloaded movies will be kept in file folders which will be loaded with merch crap that one can also order on line and it can be "sent" as a present to friends via email.

As a marketing ploy the studios will give consumers "mini" framed digital posters of the movies - to be hung up on basement walls instead of filling bookshelves with Blu-R cases.

As an extra the framed poster will come with a usb pen drive with the movie in it.

I believe it too. Technology is always evolving and I believe that there will be other forms of media.. just not disk. We'll see what the future holds, but I feel that blu's will last just as long if not longer than DVDs. If I can get 10 years of shelf life out of my disks before they become "obsolete", I'll be happy.

I thought DVDs would be the last disc media, but apparently I was wrong.

Default 3" disc media could be next.

If Holo Versatile Disc becomes a consumer item, then I can agree 100%. A full size HVD hold's about 3.9 TB. 3" disc could be the next big thing. We could easily fit blu-ray movies onto 3" HVD's with tons of space to spare. If we are going to the next level HDTV it could be a tight fit. In that case we could use dual layer HVD or stay with the current disc size.

Replacing blu-ray in 5 years time only adds fuel to the duder fodder who claim blu-ray will not last. On the other hand, if BD really is the last disc format it can last for decades just like records did.

If the industry is smart, they would support blu-ray until 2030, or longer. Rebuild consumer confidence that was lost after the VHS vs Beta war, the DVD cross over, and eventually the HD DVD vs Blu-ray war. Not to mention the forgotten Laser Disc community.

There will always be a new format on the horizon. My guess is the next format (probably in about 10 years) will be a lot smaller in size than Blu-ray discs and be something three dimensional....most probably holographic video.

At the rate technology is moving. A disc based media will be a thing of the past. You will have an online account and download your movies from the internet directly to your tv. My grandchildren will think Blu-Ray was the same thing as VHS.

Blow your Blu-ray up to a 50' wide screen, and then see if you think your blu-ray still looks better than theaters/film.

FILM HAS HIGHER RESOLUTION...... Where do you think the information that is placed on blu-ray comes from?

I personally would not like going to digital downloads. I like the cases and storing a collection on the shelf. In addition, I honestly don't see how a higher resolution will help taking into where you sit. However, technology changes daily so who knows.

Blu-ray won't be the last physical media. It may or may not be the last CD sized media. Whatever the next physical media is, it's a fair bet there will be some other twist to it besides just greater capacity.

But anyway, the notion that physical media is going away is pure hype.

it would sure be nice that if technology changes, the new format (whatever it is) would still play blu-ray (like blu plays dvds now)

I would like to keep a collection of movies... for once.....

there will NEVER be a last, be it VHS, DVD, BD, what ever replaces it, or what ever replaces what ever replaces BD, for as long as humans and society exist. The world moves forward. You enjoy what you can when you can (that meant VHS and DVD during their time and BD now)
