my bedroom is about the same size and my 606 really packs a punch in that room 999999999999x better then the tv speakers.
They had the Onkyo SR606 for $630 CAD ($510 US).

Considered it, but I was really there to get the Yamaha HTR 6190B if I could.

I did try online and actually had the item in my shopping cart, but it said expected delivery date May 3rd. Not really an option in this case.

I'll be listening to the Monitors and maybe Klipsch as Supersix suggested. Also Paradigm and anything else I hear something positive about.

No Bose

Been looking around for you at FS/BB/2001 and the like...and none have stock of this unit......

The replacement HTR-6290 is $1,499 and only offers better Zone 1/2 integration. Other than that, it's identical to the 6190.

John

PS...NEGOCIATE with them.....these guys are on commission...they'll deal!
Ok, I tried to take the $698 Brick online offer on the 6190 last night but they were out of stock. Expected delivery date was showing as May 3rd. I doubt they would even have it by then as it seems to be a discontinued line.

I decided to try one of the stores. The first one had nothing but they checked the online inventory. None of the stores had any in stock, but one of the superstores had a floor model. I went to take a look.

So I found one floor model. They eventually reduced it to $589 CAD ($477 US). I added a 5-year extended warranty and they did that for another $49 and I get that back as store credit if I don't have to make a claim. If it breaks down, they said I would probably get the 6290 as a replacement.

I think I did pretty well. It has all the features I want and I have peace of mind. That leaves me a bit more to spend on the speakers

Congrats Steve! You did great. The 6190 is a wonderful receiver and it'll serve your needs for many years to come....

So now that you have a few more $$$$ to spend on speakers...what are your inclinations right now? And how much will you have to spend? ( I love spending other people's money! LOL).

John

Thanks for your help, John.

I haven't started my research on speakers yet. A few people have mentioned Paradigm, Polk Monitor etc. so I'll read about those. I guess I will try and come up with four or five possibilities and then find a store that stocks all or most of them.

I have about $1200 left. If I don't like what I hear for $1200, I'll start by getting the fronts and add the rest as I can.

Well, I totally ignored my budget in the end.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help from everyone in this thread. I can assure you that I did not ignore it even though my final setup may not reflect that. The best piece of advice was to ignore the HTiB option and at least I managed to do that.

You already know that I bought a Yamaha HTR-6190B.

Today I auditioned speakers and ended up going with Paradigm. As I mentioned, I have a small room. For that reason I decided to go with a 5.1 configuration for now, and spend a little more on the components.

My final choice was Paradigm all the way:

Mini Monitors V6 for the fronts @ $385 CAD per pair
Atom Monitor V6 for the rears @ $269 CAD per pair
CC190 center @ $249 CAD
DSP3100 subwoofer @ $439 CAD.

It's hard to believe that those little things pump out such accurate sound. Now it will truly feel like a home theater.

Another reason I went with Paradigm is the excellent trade-in value. If I do continue to upgrade, I know I'll get a decent price for them. I added stands and wiring too.

The whole package is due to be delivered in 7-10 days.
