If I go for 1080p, I may have to hang a bed sheet (wish all of ours weren't plaid ), buy a HDMI cable from the dollar store, and ask my wife to hold the projector up everytime I watch a movie.

I believe there is a difference for Blu-ray at 1080p and 720p. But since 8 feet is relatively small for a screen, will the diffference be there?

I know its probably apples and oranges, but I got a 32" 720p TV because at that size, 32", 1080p isn't much different (Also I bougt a Toshiba REGZA, not a ViewSonic, BenQ,Vizio, or Chimei. As we all know, many other things other than rez make or break the picture quality). Also at the time of purchase, there weren't (m)any 1080p 32" LCDs.

I've talked myself into it, I want a great 720p, a great screen, great HDMI cable and a wobbly ceiling mount for 2,00US$.
From my perspective, a torn bed sheet with old cheap cable would not make as much of a negative as the gain in picture quality that the jump from 720p to 1080p makes. I expected an improvement but nowhere near what I got. Think of the difference of going from VHS to DVD. DVD to Blu-Ray is literally (to my old eyes) the same kind of jump. Like going from a 16mm print to a 35mm one. Substantial! You can always upgrade a screen or a cable but a projector is a substantial bite and not easily duplicated. I was very happy with my 720p until it gave up the ghost and now I'm a bit happy it did. Also I'm a believer in a digital signal being ones and zeros not being affected that much by cables unlike analog signals. Digital either works or it doesn't.

I want to turn deep color on but when I try to go to it in the menu it is grayed out and won't let me go to it.

I've got 52 hours clocked in 5 days on my new Panny AE3000. Dvd's don't look nearly as good as they did on my lil Sammy 40" 6-series. I'm throwing a 120" screen size and its friggin huge. There is just not enough info on a regular DVD when you are seeing the image that big. (they look good from the fridge 40' away ) Blu's look fantastic, and HD cable service is just very, very good.

When I upgraded my audio, I could then hear the weaknesses in mp3's- which led to a spike in my cd collection.

Now with the projector, I foresee a spike in my blu count.

Once you are hooked... you're hooked. But it's always nice when a friend comes over to see an upgrade and just stands there speechless for a few minutes...

+1

BD is perfect for home projectors, the image holds up beautifully even at huge sizes, and it should -- it's basically the same resolution as 2K, which is the theatrical standard until the switchover to 4K.

I told my buddy that eventually I'm going to buy EVERY bluray that comes out!

Do we have a Panny AE3000 official-type thread? We should.

I'm watching 6 Days and 7 Nights on DirectTV HD and the contrast is fantastic. I'm working on my DIY screen on Friday so I'm expecting a nice blu-watching weekend.

So Grevlin, have you decided if you are doing a 2.40 screen or just a 1.78 ratio?

I think I'm going with 16:9 for the screen ratio. It fills up nicely for HD tv and movies. I don't mind the bars on top and bottom for wide screen movies.

At 16:9 the screen is 105" wide and 59" tall.

This gives 120" diagonal for 16:9

and around 110" diagonal for 2.39:1

(All viewable measurements)

Honestly, its pretty stinking big!

Yeah you don't really realize how big it is until you actually put it up on the wall. 2.40 ratio is so breathtaking when you have it stretch out when you put in a blu ray movie. Its so awesome.
