The important point is that you don't want to set the sub to just 80 Hz, because if it's miscalibrated you don't want to risk dropping part of the frequency range. Most subs use a manual dial to set the crossover point. If the dial isn't calibrated properly, 80 Hz on the dial might be closer to 75 or 70 Hz. Typically you set the sub higher than 80 just to make sure the sub's built in crossover doesn't filter out additional signal information already set by the receiver.

There is no additional amplification following this process. The sub won't receive anything above 80 Hz from the receiver.
well my situation is a little different.

i have an onkyp 806 with the built in crossovers for every speaker independently

that being said if i set the fronts to 80 and the sun to 120 (thru the receiver) ill be in a different situation that what you described as 80hz for my onkyo does not mean 80hz across the board.

Ok wait, maybe I misunderstood you before. I have the crossover 'disabled' on my SVS subwoofer. I've set LPF of LFE on the receiver to 120 Hz so that all the frequencies upto 120 Hz on the .1 track is being heard. It may be that the frequencies above 100 Hz becomes directional, but if it is encoded on the .1 track, isn't it meant to be heard? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't setting the LPF of LFE to 80 Hz would mean you will not hear the bass above 80 Hz on the .1 track?

This is from my subwoofer manual:
"Crossover Frequency. If you use your AVR’s internal crossover to manage bass frequencies (highly recommended), the setting of this knob on your SVS sub is irrelevant. (Note: Use the sub’s crossover ―Enable/Disable‖ switch discussed below to take advantage of this configuration.)"
