Besides checking for loose wires, tell us what speakers you are using. Because of the Ohms are low on the speakers that can cause the unit to over heat also.

When you find out the Ohm's of your speakers, if they are not below 4 then make sure you have the proper settings in your receiver. The settings should be under 'Speaker Setup' and then 'Speaker Settings' and look for 'Speaker Impedance' which is the Ohm settings.

If the speakers are under 4Ohms then that is your problem.

Actually, I've mentioned the possibility of overheating due to poor ventilation twice. That was the first thing I thought of especially since Onkyo's are known to put out a good amount of heat, but others are right to suspect a short in the wiring. Both are definite possibilities that he should check into.

When you purchase a receiver, I would start by researching...you can start with a simple site like amazon. Type in what you want - example, HD Receivers...and the search engine will return results to you.

Yamaha does make HD receivers, HDMI, 7.1, etc. It just depends on the model you get.

Decide on a model before going to the store, so you don't buy more or less than you want.

Good Luck!

Yeah, he's been a little quiet, but I hope he has some luck. I'd hate for him to buy a new receiver and it turns out that there's nothing wrong with the one he already has.

Sorrry i haven't responded been busy at work working long hours. I need to put my receiver out in the open got it tucked in my entertainment center where it is surrounded by my ps3,cablebox and my brothers 360 so it might be overheating. I have the speakers connected with my old sony htib wires i know they suck but haven't got around to getting real audio cables. Can any one suggest any good audio cables that will work on the quintet 3 speakers.

My speaker wire came with my speakers. Its probably not the best, but hey, I wasn't gonna spend big money on wire. That's just me. If you want good speaker wire I'm sure someone can point you in that direction. As far as other cables like HDMI and component I also use cheap ones. As long as they are made well there should be no problem. Don't buy Monster because they are ridiculously overpriced. I think the biggest thing is to make sure wires are connected properly and not coming in contact with others. Sometimes exposed speaker wire may touch another at the point of connection to your receiver or on the back of your speakers. The other thing that could be an issue is the clearance on top of the receiver since all of the hot air is vented there. If its in a tight area in a cabinet without good ventilation it can overheat.

Another thing that I just thought of concerns surge protectors. I had an issue before where my receiver and TV would cut off at random. I figured out that I had too much current on one of my surge protectors. I solved the problem by connecting the receiver and TV on separate surge protectors. I have a lot running on these two power strips so that's another thing you may want to look at. I have a PS3, Xbox 360, a computer with an 850watt power supply, my receiver, and my TV in my entertainment center. My subwoofer is also running. I had to make sure too much wasn't on the same strip. I see that you also have several devices running along with your TV. Are you running it all off of the same surge protector/power strip?

nothing on the display is interesting, might be going into protection mode. double check to make sure the wires arent crossed or touching

bigpapy,
Try disconnecting all the wires and see if the unit still shuts off. If so it may have a transformer issue or its going into protection mode.

My yammy has a service mode and will display the error code. If it goes this far you an locate the nearest authorized dealer and they will direct you how to retreive the error code and what it means.

Also I remove all banana plugs from the back of the receiver I was thinking may be that was the problem but nothing change. I notice the problem when I move to my new place because now I can listen at high volume but now my Yamaha is not responding,at my old apartment never use the receiver at high volume.

Unfortunatley it sounds as if you have an internal issue. Like I said before, visit here http://www.yamaha.com/yec/customer/s...x?CTID=5010090 and contact one of the service dealers listed and they will be able to give you an idea of what is wrong over the phone.

Unless its still under warranty, then contact the store you bought it from and see what your alternatives are in correcting the issue.

holy hell. that may be your problem. +16 dB is max volume. careful you dont clip your speakers. your receiver might have a volume protection mode enabled and thats why its shutting off. if its comfortable at that volume you should adjust your speaker settings.
