Haha, yeah that was a big plus one sign! Nothing wrong with regurgitating old thread topics like this from time to time IMO, it's the only way new members could ever find and participate in them.

I'd recommend a blu newb get:
Band of Brothers ('cause it's my favorite blu)
Cars (or some other Pixar or animated blu, to see how great they look)
TDK
Iron Man
King Kong

Default Blu-Rays that Rate "5"

Okay, so there are a lot of Blu-Rays out there that earn 4's and 4.5's...at least in terms of quality.

But which ones out there would rate an easy "5" all the way around?

Which one is a great movie, great plot, entertaining, and involving?

A disc with a reference quality transfer...both audio and video?

Which disc is a TOTAL 5??

Default Pan's

Pan's Labyrinth is pretty close to the complete package! Reference quality picture and with a DTS HD 7.1 mix the sound is astounding! This is a great film and a perfect 10 in terms of film power. The villian is as nasty as they come and the story gives hope! Obviously the Dark Knight would be another must own!

Okay, here goes...

The Dark Night (it has the best transfer that I have ever seen)
Bram Stoker's Dracula (for it's artistic and visual beauty)
Zodiac
Any Tom Clancy movie
Jurassic Park (not released yet but WILL be a MUST own!!)

Default Pic and sound!

I'd start with in no order, The Dark Knight, Baraka, Pan's Labyrinth, Shoot'em Up, and 2001.

Not many. Rating is subjective, especially the movie rating.

For me: (movie rating / PQ rating/ AQ rating)

Band of Brothers (5 / 4.5 / 5)
2001: A Space Odyssey (5/ 5/ 4.5)
Pan's Labryntht (5/ 4.5 / 5)
Lives of Others (5/ 4.5 / 4.5)

I know others will list: Ironman, Dark Knight, I RObot, etc, and while the PQ/AQ is GREAT, those movies just aren't 5 star movies for me. To each their own.

The Dark Knight is a great title to have on BD.
As for catalog titles I'd say John Carpenters The Thing and King Kong are pretty close to perfect. Universal does a great job with their BD releases.

I agree with you on 2001! Great movie that transferred well to Blu-Ray!

I don't have a nice sound system, these are 5 by 5 (movie/pq)

LWW & Prince Caspian
High School Musical 3
Mad Men s1
Kung-Fu Panda
Cloverfield
POTC: The Curse of The Black Pearl
Pinocchio
and maybe Man on Fire (pq probably isn't a 5 but the movie is stylized so it's as good as it can be)

For me I'd say a defintie all-around 5 for:
- The Dark Knight
- 2001 : A Space Odyssey
- IronMan
- SpiderMan Trilogy
- Paprika
- Freedom
- I, Robot

A few movies that only fall short in one category but are very close to an overall 5 (for me, at least) :
- Transformers
- Shinobi: Heart under Blade
- The Incredible Hulk
- The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe

I'm only choosing from movies I already have and have actually watched, so there might of course be others I would put in the full 5 category.

The Fall should certainly be mentioned. Two foreign films that deserve consideration are Red Cliff - Part 1 and The Warlords.
