I can live BOTH without cable and internet. I just cancel my comcast cable recently because they were charging me an outrageous price a month for standard cable. Besides I used my internet much more than just browsing the web. I make online payments, shopping, emails...etc. ALL of it is much more useful to me than watching cable.

people lived without both once, it would be easy to do it again.

I think without tv people would be much more intelligent.

But then how would I watch Nova and the History Channel??? You mean I would actually have to read science and history books again?

To hell with that. Are science and history books in HD?

p.s. this might be the most worthless thread ever.

I disagree with that at its root, but perhaps there is a context I'm missing (I apologize if that's the case). I do, however, see laziness/fat kid syndrome being much more prevalent in the past 20 years. I could see one blaming that on television/video games/computers/etc, since every house nowadays seems to have several sets, and that watching TV isn't really a treat or a privilege as it once was; it's become more of a "right" than anything else.

I personally believe intelligence (or lack thereof) is directly attributable to our schooling system. Genes and other factors play a part, but you need to be taught well in order to be smart.

This of course is a different topic for a-whole-nother thread, though. Way to go, buddy!

Bad schooling is a bit of a cop out. If your local schools suck then maybe the parents should take some extra time and invest it in teaching the kids themselves. Sitting around waiting for the government to "fix" the school system is a disservice to your kid.

Good schools help but parents are ultimately responsible.

Why can't they work with their kid for an hour or so after school? priorities.

If you rent an apartment it's usually the landlord's responsibility to keep up repairs. However, if you have a hole in your roof and water is coming in and you have a landlord that is irresponsible and doesn't respond and keeps putting it off then you fix it yourself asap, you don't sit around on principle and ruin your dwelling.

I agree completely. You're preaching to the choir, my friend! I was going to go deeper into how I was really feeling about the subject, but didn't want this thread to go there since the original post has nothing to do with that. The only point I wanted to make was that I disagree with the fact that watching TV makes someone less intelligent than someone who doesn't watch one. A quick in-and-out point, although the subject deserves much more than that.

My bad for combating SellmeyourDVD. Maybe I should have left it alone.

Hmm well I admit I have no cable in my room thus my watching of it is excessivly sparling.

The internet and a PC can resolve most of any wants to watch tv if you know where to go and have no moral compass.

Or you take a hobby like file collector.. the job of a file collector is to find a specific types of files and collect all of them forever.... and adding to the collection of specific types of files like..

Collect all known pdf files..
Collect all known pictures of cats...
Collect all versions of dumped roms.
Collect all tv shows from the 1970's internationally...
Collect all educational films released by the goverment...

etc.

Cheers.

Personally gaming takes almost all my free time, and going outside to think and enjoy the cool breeze.

I'll have to side with the majority on this one. Besides, you can watch any show you want online.

I can live without cable TV.. it's easy.. just hook up an antenna to your house outdoors. and get free digital TV. yeah it's not all the 1000 cable channels.. but it's still some TV.

internet i can't live without. plus you can watch most anything from cable TV on the internet now anyways.. so it's a win, win with internet. it would have to be high speed internet though.. not dial up or some crap like that.
