Spiderman 3 could've been better, but it wasn't bad by a stretch. I'm mostly mad that they killed off Venom before my eyes blinked! WTF were they thinking? I don't think a Venom movie is a bad idea. Catwoman was horrible, but it wasn't because it was a bad idea nor was Halle Berry a bad choice. Man did she work that leather! The problems were bad directing and the unbelievably bad writing. It was one of the worst scripts I've ever witnessed....just plain horrible. And McFarlane can't really talk. He DID participate in the Spawn movie. Eye candy aside it was pretty lackluster. The one-liners in Spawn make a Schwarzenegger movie look the Ten Commandments. Venom is one of my favorite characters and a correctly done film can be great. Unfortunately, Hollywood hasn't been very kind to comic book movies, so I have little faith in this effort. Hopefully, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'd think a movie about Venom could be great. I'd go see it.

BS.

You can make a show about a "bad guy" (Profit, Dexter, and to a degree Nip/Tuck) and even a movie (Godfather, most horror movies, etc. ).

Give his back story but don't over-sympathize. They're will be people who think they're unforgivable and others who think they are a necessary evil. Than they're is me who will likely root for the bad guy.

Yes please! I hope it's successful and then they release a team-up movie next (hopefully an adaptation of the Maximum Carnage x-over storyline - hey... I can dream)

Biggest problem with Venom design in Spider Man 3. Venom had no tongue. It's a key element in how the character is drawn.

It's now official:

Quote:
If you weren't happy with Spider-Man 3 – um, was anybody? – and its treatment of Venom, then you may have reason to rejoice. Sony has officially confirmed a Spider-Man spin-off focusing on none other than Venom himself. Hired to helm the script is the writing team from Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Unfortunately, there isn't much to say about the movie this early in the game. Wernick says that the pair is basically sworn to secrecy about the project, but they did confirm that they were big fans of the character and planned to treat him with the respect he deserves. “We read [Venom] growing up, but we were not experts,” admits Reese. “We certainly know the mythology of Venom, but went back and learned more when it became clear that we could actually get this job.”

Reese also confesses that he's already worried about potential backlash from fans of the comic and Venom. “There's a burden on you to meet the expectations of people,” he explains.

What do you think? Can a Venom movie work? And should Spidey make a cameo?

Update: During their Zombieland set visit, ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! had the chance to speak with Reese and Wernick about the upcoming Venom flick. Though the duo still declined to give any specifics, they did say they had handed over their draft for the film and were awaiting word back.

“There were certain things they wanted us… certain parameters they gave us,” said Reese. “But largely we pitched them something and they liked it but they had changes, so we worked on the outline for a long time and then we wrote the script. So with Marvel and Sony and us it’s definitely very, very collaborative.”

The writers have already written in Stan Lee

Quote:
At this point, it's a foregone conclusion that Marvel's former president and chairman Stan Lee will have a cameo in every single movie based on a Marvel Comics character whether or not he had any direct association with that character during his lengthy career. But how many of the upcoming movies can claim that he's already been written into the script?

When we spoke to Zombieland creators Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese a few months back, they were hesitant about saying much about the Venom script they'd been working on. (You can read what they could say here.) As we were going through our lengthy interview with them, we found a little missed tidbit that might thrill Marvel fans, as they admitted to us that Lee will appear in the Venom movie and that they've even already written his part!

"Oh, yeah. Stan Lee is in it," Reese told us. "I feel like that's the one thing we can say. He does appear in our script, and we're very specific about where he is and why. May he live forever. Let's hope he's in many movies to come."

I'm not entirely opposed to a Venom flick...risky but maybe they'll do a good job, who knows

my main problems with three were the obvious Sandman ruining the reason why Peter became spiderman thing, the villain team up, there were quite a few too many effects, and the dance scenes

my other big problem was the goddam news report going on in the middle of the climatic battle I mean did we really need to hear how badly Spiderman was getting his ass whooped or "this could be the end of spiderman" (a stupid comment all around to put in a super hero movie)

overall Spiderman 3 grew on me

I know Raimi probably doesn't (and hopefully won't) dip into a symbiote again but a small piece of Venom is still with Dr. Connors from when he was analyzing it for Peter

Stan Lee had nothing to do with Venom. He has a place cameoing in Spider-man or X-men or Fantastic Four or Iron Man or Incredible Hulk, but he doesn't need to be automatically in anything Marvel. He's nearly as out of place in a Venom movie as he would be in a Punisher movie. Both Venom and Punisher originated as Spider-man villains who went on to get name notoriety on their own as anti-heroes.
