In the movie's 500 Days of Summer opening scene, I need help analyzing the first 12 min. Any help at all is appreciated! What could certain things mean, symbolize or anything on the opening scene of the movie. Thanks!!!!

So there was this girl I know that started talking about the film 500 Days of Summer, and she said she didn't like how they made Summer look like the bad guy. Those weren't her exact words, but that's what she basically said. Then later on, I started thinking about it. Sure you can make the argument that both were wrong, but I'm trying to understand both prospectives. At that time, I sided with Tom. But then I realized, well, yeah. It's his movie. Which is why Summer comes off a underdeveloped as a character, so I don't think it's fair to say she was wrong for what she did without fully understanding the situation.

As you said, the film is sympathetic to Tom's perspective and leans towards his subjective viewpoint. Objectively, Summer did nothing wrong. She didn't blow hot and cold; she never made any grand declarations of never-ending love, etc. In fact she's clearly presented as a cynic when it comes to matters of the heart. It's Tom who paints this entirely inaccurate picture of Summer that barely resembles any of the so-called signals Summer may have been putting out there. He viewed the relationship as he wanted it to be, not what it actually happened to be. It's harsh, but that's all on him.

It's been a long while since I've seen the film, so forgive me if i'm forgetting certain portions of it. My memory on the film is still vague. But I still don't understand what the moral of the story is anymore? At first I took it as the whole stereotype concept of men are pigs and women finding true love, but in reverse. But ever since I've started to notice that some women have a problem by how Summer is portrayed, it just got me thinking about it.

Summer always was 100% honest with Tom about how she felt about him and while the film is sympathetic towards Tom for unrequitedly falling in love with her, Summer didn’t do anything wrong. I think the movie is quite clear about that. Romantic comedy generally isn’t my thing, but this was one of the few movies in that genre over the last couple of decades, which I thought we’re truthful about how complex falling in love can can be. There aren’t necessarily good or bad guys when things don’t work out.
