There are lots of reasons. Obviously, though, have your reasons for going with a PS3, which is fine. You can't really go wrong.

I prefer stand-alone BD players. Gimme a Pioneer BD player any day unless I cant afford it then its a Sony BD player. My brother doesnt understand it [PS3 Player] but to each his own.

There are reasons. Fan noise, IR remote control (so you can integrate with a universal remote), analog output (for folks without an HDMI receiver), and in some cases cost (if you don't want a game console, you can find standalones for less than a PS3).

At one time, it was hard to argue against the PS3 for Blu-ray, but standalone players have reached a point where that really has changed.

The best Blu-ray player is Oppo BDP-83 because I bought it last night for $560 and I need to justify it to my wife.

BD stands for Big Daddy. Anybody who dares to disagree will be banned.

I love that circular argument. I need to get better at those for when I have "discussions" with my wife!

The PS3 has been constantly firmware updated since it came out. I expect there will be some furture heavy duty PS3 firmware updates for Blu ray. Well see if current Blu ray players will be firmware updated with the same constancy.

Congrats on the OPPO Big Daddy, your going to love it.

I have both a PS3 and an OPPO BDP-83. The PS3 is a great machine but performance wise the OPPO is equal to if not better in every way. DVD up conversion is near HD depending on the source, garbage in garbage out. Plus if you need 7.1 analog outs the PS3 is not an option.

I would go with Panasonic for a standalone Blu-ray disc player, unless you are a gamer, but the PS3, while being a quality BD player, it is an inferior gaming system compared to the 360. I know that will upset some, but it's my opinion.

If you can hold off a few weeks before buying a Blu-ray player, Costco will have Panasonic's DMP-BD60 on sale for $50 off. They don't call it that, since Costco offers their electronics with slightly different model numbers, but it is the 60 series unit with a free HDMI cable. I believe they currently sell it for $279.99 or $289.99, but then between May 11th through the 31st, you can get $50 off from Costco. I am not sure if the coupon IS required, sometimes they aren't, but I am sure their customer service desk can give you a coupon book if you didn't get one.

I have used a PS3 for a year and half without any problems. I cannot complain, and have not considered changing my player.

I hope your implying the 360 is superior to the PS3 because of a better software library. Because it can't be because of better hardware considering the 360 is estimated to have as high as a 30% failure rate. Some people have had as many as seven 360's due to the red ring of death. I'm no Playstation fan boy, but I find it hard to recommend the 360 considering I cross my fingers every day I turn mine on that today isn't RROD day.

Yes, the 360 game library and online play are far superior to the PS3, but I have to go give credit to Sony for having faith in Blu-ray before it was the only HD format, and going with the internal drive, rather than MS's optional HD-DVD external drive. Sony took a gamble there and won in that arena since Blu-ray became the standard (and I was never an HD-DVD supporter). I guess, in some ways, MS was smart to do it as an external device because had it been an internal drive from the very beginning, or MS started producing units with an internal HD-DVD drive, people now that had one would basically be stuck playing standard DVD's or the few HD-DVD's that were released compared to Blu-ray. I actually was the first person outside of MS to test the HD-DVD drive, believe it or not, it's true. I had a team of four MS personal come to my home about six months before it retailed. Why I was chosen, I am not sure, but the lead behind the unit told me I was the first to get to see and test it outside of their offices. Sadly, they could not get the thing to work. I wasn't allowed to discuss it until it came out, but good lord, I knew that drive was going to fail miserably and it did. But it was rather cool to test something no one else had tested or seen. So I give Sony lots of props for having enough faith to put Blu-ray drives in their systems.

The failure rate regarding 360's, yes it has occurred and continues too, but I have to doubt you on the 30% failure rate. Also, I believe SOME (not all) of the problems people are having is due to negligence on their part. Overheating is a big problem of the 360 and this can be caused by people putting the unit inside a cabinet with no ventilation and then shutting the doors and playing for hours. That can easily overheat a unit causing the red rings. Am I saying that is the ONLY way to get the red rings? No, not at all, but I have spoken to a lot of people who have 360's and I would say 80 percent of them have them me they put them inside cabinets and close the door to "block out the sound of the unit" and I have told them they are doing more harm than good.

The 360 isn't a perfect system but at least Microsoft stepped up to the plate extended the warranty on them from 1 year to 3 years, and is continuously making revisions to the system to lessen the percentage of units that fail. No electronic device is perfect, not the PS3, not the XBOX 360, nothing. I have a feeling MS has learned a great deal about the problems that have plagued the 360, and will take those lessons learned and implement them into the next generation console.

But as a stand alone Blu-ray unit, I personally would choose a Panasonic.

Because not everyone wants to do those things. Its really about users preference now. HTPC people say the same thing about the PS3 - however it's still about users preference. Get the one you like

There is this perception that the 360 is better than the PS3 but it's simply not true. You cannot believe a system is better due to it's user base as we all know the 360 came out much sooner than the PS3, thus more users and more games available. Hardware for hardware the 360 doesn't hold a candle to the PS3. Sony gave up their video game fan base for much much bigger fish, the next generation media and they succeeded. How many video gamers are out there? 25-50 million? How many people buy DVD's 200 million? Sony was simply ingenious.

To get off the thread jack (which I did not begin anyways):

OP: you've made a wise decision, the PS3 has continually shown that it is the 1st to get BD updates, the most reliable BD playback device (meaning it plays all BD's with no worries). The PS3 is worlds above HTPC in terms of worry free, HTPC people have to figure out drivers, software etc. You are just asking for a Job's "bag of hurt" with HTPC if you are not a true computer geek for lack of a better word.

I can see now, honey can you configure the software on the computer to see Spirit then re-install the drivers for Indiana Jones. I'd have a computer flying at me faster than an R8!

Keep in mind, it also get updates for games and media, not just Blu-ray. Not really fair to compare PS3's number of updates to stand alones.

Yeah I know I'm just talking about Blu ray updates. 1st gen, 2nd gen stand alone blu ray players have been left behind

Why would I buy a standalone BD player you ask?

First and foremost, I bought my BD player for only $177.00 on Black Friday, about half the cost of a PS3.

Second of all, I prefer to have my AVR decode all the lossless audio, not the player. The PS3 doesn't for example bitstream dts-HD MA but will instead decode it and send it to your AVR/PRO as PCM.

Thirdly, the 'much more' that you listed for the PS3 isn't more if you don't need it. The last thing I want is a BD player having a hard drive, LOL. Most recently available BD players have internet connectivity not just the PS3. So it's just as easy to keep one's player up to date with the latest firmware updates. My BD player will display photos. That's nothing special about the PS3 or for a standalone for that matter. They both can do that.

To conclude, the PS3 is not the best player for me. If you're a gamer, then the PS3 is perhaps the best player for you.

However, I don't think that my BD player or any standalone can be promoted as being better. Only the HT enthusiast can decide which is better for him/herself depending on what one wants or doesn't want.

Thumbs up From reading reviews and the forums I think the OPPO 83

I think the OPPO 83 is one of the best blu ray players that also has impressive DVD playback and can play virtually every other type of media from CD, to all the high end audio discs and even via USB and more!
