Just like you, I have no need for upscaling, so in that regard save yourself the $$$.

7.1 is great, but im just doing 5.1 right now & don't feel like im missing anything really. I have had several very pricey 7.1 setups too. If you have the room & money well of course get your self a nice 7.1!!! Why not!! I'm still taking advantage of my rear surround inputs cause I have my fronts bi-amped.

I'm running 6.1 and it's great. The one thing you'll want to figure out first before jumping into 7.1 is the room big enough for it to be warranted?
If your theatre is set up in a small to medium room 7.1 is probably not going to be that great because not enough seperation/space between the speakers. The extra speakers go to the rear so make sure the back wall is a nice distance from your viewing spot.
If you have a large room where your theatre is set up I would go for it.
Also there's not to many movies in 7.1 as of yet, but most 7.1 receivers will allow you to do a matrix type 7.1 on a 5.1 audio sources.

No need for 1.3, 1.1 spec supports LPCM. Knock yourself out

This is going to sound so stupid but does anyone actually know the difference between HDMI 1.3 and 1.1?

I just got back from Best Buy where they had a new shipment of the pioneer av receivers and I just wanted to check my sources on something. The guy at BB told me that the only way to get full 1080p after feeding your player and everything else through the receiver to the TV is to have a 1080p upscaler. A 1080p "repeater" doesn't send the image through uncompressed and therefore not 1080p. However, I was under the impression that "repeater" basically means that there is no image loss whatsoever. Was the Best Buy dude right?

Here's what he said, "Anything that's 1080p going through a repeater av receiver is losing its 1080p rendering unless the Blu Ray player is plugged directly into the TV and the sound only into the receiver. However anything going through a 1080p Hdmi upscaling receiver maintains its uncompressed 1080p rendering."

I thought he was wrong too, but he was so adamant about it. I thought why would it be called a 1080p repeater if it didn't render full HD and downgrade the picture to 720p? He claimed that Sony had a similar one about a year ago where they had a repeater and not upscaling and people never realized they were actually downgrading their picture quality by running blu ray players through the av receiver.

That was a little bit long winded but I hope I made it clear what he said.

AFAIK he is wrong.
I pass 1080p from my Pio BD player to my Pio 1018 and then to my Tv. It starts as 1080p and ends up on display as 1080P. The only upscaling my receiver does is from sources other than HDMI.

You are absolutely correct. A receiver that supports 1080p, when passed a 1080p signal from a Blu-ray player, is going to send the 1080p signal to your TV.

Could you clarify? So if I run my BD player through a 1080p repeater av receiver will I still get a good 1080p signal? Or will I need to dish out the extra 100 dollars for an HDMI upscaling receiver to get the 1080p signal to the TV?

I'm thinking about upgrading my Blu-ray player to the PS3.... would the Sony Bravio Soundbar work as a "receiver" to decode the new firmware updates for the PS3? Or, would I not even need to worry about that since some of you are saying the PS3s in stores now should already have this update. Thanks.

Think about it. A 1080p video information is received by a receiver to passthrough towards a HDTV. If the video feed gets DEGRADED down FROM 1080p before it UPSCALES back to 1080p, wouldn't you think that would be a SUCKY receiver?

The guy gets his info wrong to try sell you a more expensive receiver.
