Some news for casual sellers like myself

Quote:
We're writing with some exciting news about eBay fees. Starting June 16:

Every 30 days, your first 5 Auction-style listings will have NO Insertion Fees when you list with eBay's Sell Your Item form or Simple listing form--regardless of your start price.

The first 5 listings with no Insertion Fees will have a Final Value Fee of 8.75% of the sales price or $20, whichever is lower. Additional items sold during the same 30-day period will have the same Insertion Fees and Final Value Fees as they do today.

If you are currently using an eBay tool or third-party listing solution, you can either list your first 5 Auction-style listings with the new pricing structure through eBay's Sell Your Item form or Simple listing form or continue with your current practices at the current pricing-whichever option works best for you.

This change is part of our continued effort to lower the upfront costs of selling on eBay. The 5 listings with no Insertion Fees are especially helpful for sellers who may not sell in high volume, but offer unique and hard-to-find inventory buyers expect to find on eBay. Learn more.

I selected Media Mail and eBay forced me to put a maximum of $3.00. That would have been perfect if I didn't need to buy the materials and get delivery confirmation.

I also had to ship multiple DVDs (e.g., Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy), which meant I had to get a bigger bubble envelope.

I really don't like ebay's forced shipping fees...

Part of the blame goes to sellers who were charging 8.00 to ship a videogame or DVD etc. last summer and sending it media mail...

I used to sell a bunch of stuff on ebay, but sometimes it felt like it wasn't worth all the hassle to make a few bucks. Once I move to my new place, I know I need to get rid of bunch of stuff so I might go back to sell ing it on ebay. Or i might try out craiglist.

It's costing me $5 - $6 to send DVDs via media mail.

$2.77 for the weight

$0.80 for delivery confirmation

$1.75 - $2.25 for the bubble mailer/envelope (which I'll buy from Staples, etc., from now on).

wow...thats pretty expensive for the mailers..

I get mine from Costco in a bulk pack for like $.60 each.

I don't normally take the package into consideration, though...

Or, the people who sell stuff for a penny and then charge $40 shipping. It used to happen alll the time. That way they wouldn't have to pay a higher fee for final value and a higher insertion fee for a higher priced item.

Not counting the price of the mailer, media mail should be around 2.00-3.00 including delivery confirmation. I send FCM and that's around 2.20-2.70. Sometimes FCM is cheaper and its faster than media mail.

Not sure where you get that. As I said, it cost me $2.77 to mail plus $0.80 for delivery confirmation.

EDIT: Ah, I get it. I think maybe you guys are unaware of the USPS rate changes effective May 11, 2009. Prices on everything went up.

I use Paypal for my shipping costs. Delivery confirmation is cheaper than filling out the form at the post office. It's 0.18. Free if you ship priority mail.

But ya I haven't checked out the new postal rates yet...

an example of a game or DVD I sent out. tracking number removed.

Argh...a guy that won an item a few days ago still hasn't paid. I thought I saw that he had, so I left him positive feedback.

I can see from his activity he's still on eBay freely bidding away, but not responding to my messages or paying me.

I just don't want to take the time to re-list it. I feel I won't get the amount of $$ he bid this time.

I usually just make my own boxes. As long as they are wrapped well. You don't need expensive bubble wrap when you can just grab some newspapers and smash them around the dvd. That should give sufficient protection. Get some boxes and tape them together to fit the dvd. You don't have to make it look ghetto, it will look great also if you wrap it with brown paper as in brown paper bags. Looks like a regular package. Shipped hundreds of dvds this way and everyone gave excellent feedback on packaging. All free packaging. Use paypal to make a shipping label, and you will only spend $2.57 and that's with delivery confirmation and this price is good for media mail up to 1 pound. no dvd with packaging is going to weigh more than a pound.

I also just add a note in the listing so that way if they don't pay you have an out with ebay saying it was clearly listed and he chose to bid anyway just right in the description
