It is important with TrueHD tracks on applicable BDs to make sure that DNR is turned OFF both in the player and AVR. I cannot stress this more.
Surely you mean Dial Norm as DNR is a video compression issue. Many receivers will automatically compensate for Dial Norm if the audio is being bitstreamed. And also, I do agree with your assessment even if Lionsgate is essentially matrixing the surround channels to the SB channels into 7.1. It's fine with me.

On all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies the default track is DD5.1 (english2) so you have to select "english1" to get the PCM track.

How can you say that BOLT'S underwhelming? Half that film is filled with subwoofer, and the other half is crystal clarity and use of rear surrounds. I use that for reference material just as much as I do Wall-E and Kung-Fu Panda.

I thing it should have read "DRC" = Dynamic Range Compression in my post instead of DNR.

In my listening I base it on what my expectations are. While I admit that BOLT is well recorded, there were moments in the film that I felt were lacking per my expectations. In the Universal films I listed above, there was never any time where I didn't get what I expected. On the Disney films I cited, there were occasions where I was expecting something and I didn't receive it. In comparison a film like KUNG FU PANDA, that gave me everything and more than what I was expecting for what was onscreen.

Now I tell you one Disney/Miramax film I saw recently that gave me what I expected: NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. While it's more a dialogue film, the dialogue was clear, music was articulate and when it came to the sound effects they gave me everything I was expecting (i'm talking the PCM, haven't heard the DTSMA). I've also stated I consider the PCM of THE PRESTIGE to be reference.

Im telling you guys go watch Apocalypto again. That has some of the deepest bass you will hear in the jungle at certain times with huge booms. PCM is amazing on that one.

Also its easily Fox and Universal for AUDIO. Independance Day, The Mummy, Master and Commander have some major clean audio.
