Movies with the best PQ Narnia, Hellboy 2, Avatar. No grain in those, yet they got the best Pq scores. Explain that to me. I understand some grain can look good in movies, not going to debate that.

I'll give one, because they all look like they're supposed to look, it's not about which movie has the cleanest, window-like look. It's about replicating the particular look of a movie, they're all unique and they all have different qualities, LUCKILY Blu-ray is the perfect format to showcase how each respective movie is supposed to look, that doesn't always happen unfortunately. |

Ok there may be slight noise in Narnia, Hellboy etc, but I thought majority of the highest PQ scores had the least grain. To me a little is ok, but too much can be distracting, Predator is not bad in some jungles scenes, but in others it is horrible. I mean watching a movie with tons of grain is like having a screen on the TV screen. I understand older movies having more grain. I was not comparing them. Wizard of Oz was shot in black and white, its been restored, it looks great. But should that of had a black and white presentation? I mean it was shot that way right.

No offense guys, but could take this discussion of grain, noise reduction and other things to a different thread. It's nice that everyone is so involved this thread and wanting a new version of Predator, but the thread has become a breeding ground for bickering and arguing and nobody seems to be getting along

So we can see how each movie is supposed to look. And WoZ was shot with color too, the opening sequence is in sepia as it originally was. That was done for artistic effect. |

Edit: Sorry Q!, you beat me to it. ![]() And btw, it's not just older movies that have grain - it's any movie that was shot on film. So The Dark Knight, Iron Man and Star Trek all have grain. The reason Predator has heavy grain isn't because it's older, it's because that's how it was intentionally shot. Last edited by Dotpattern; 05-20-2010 at 07:26 PM. |

![]() Either way, I don't think think that it should be removed and result in a loss of a detail just because someone doesn't like grain. You could turn on the noise reduction on your TV. Sure it'll have an adverse effect on PQ, but that probably wouldn't bother you too much provided it gets rid of the grain. Though, I am just assuming you'd rather see things the way you want instead of the way they're intended to be seen (I don't mean offense by this, as I know there are people on the forum that don't calibrate their sets just because they don't like the way the calibration looks and it's their personal preference... though I wouldn't ask any of them their opinion on how a film looks because they wouldn't actually know since they're altering the image...) But yeah... back to Pedator! I'm actually somewhat excited for this release. I've actually never seen any features for the film so I am looking forward to checking them out. In fact, I think the original Blu-ray release was the first time I've ever owned this film. Now I just have to wait for a good deal on the second one. |

Yeah I didn't realize how much of a jerk I was when I wrote that. After the replies I looked back at it and thought maybe that was wrong writing that.
Now back to predator. I was holding out waiting for a new release, but last summer it was 10 bucks so I picked it up. The PQ was an improvement. I have the DVD special edition and if your a fan, the special features are very interesting. I hope Fox goes all out on this one. If I pick this up I will sell my old one. But I will wait till more news comes about this. |

Look at The Wrestler. It's a newer movie but it was intentionally shot on 16mm and doesn't have that "clean" look that you're associating with new movies. |

Dude you know just forget it let it go. I don't want to debate. Any way Road Warrior looks pretty good huh. I have been wanting to get that. Blade runner does look really good. 2001 looks like it was shot yesterday. Tron will probably look pretty good too.

Not if it's already transparent to the master. Increasing a bitrate doesn't automatically mean it'll look better.

I'd say the chances of an 18mbps MPEG2 encode of a full-frame grainy movie being transparent to the master are close to zero...
