It was either that, or they felt like they'd already had enough of the sunk costs and they just tried to cut their losses, figuring that it was never going to make its money back no matter what they did.

Imagine it playing Venice first, maybe even winning it, and then going the slow rollout starting in about November instead of just getting dumped in late December.
I remember seeing a panel of young 'critics' trying to decide what was more exciting, Tarantino's (then)upcoming, "The Hateful Eight" or Scorsese's "Silence" (this was back in 2015). Several critics stated bluntly that they had zero interest in a religious film, so they were going with the Tarantino film. Then, when it was released, all over social media had that same kind of sentiment. So, that definitely was a factor. The Academy had just given Best Picture to "Spotlight" the year before, so weren't at all interested in awarding a film about Catholic priests' struggle the next.

Also, Scorsese was apparently still editing the film right up until November of that year (2016), and everyone was wondering why we hadn't even seen a trailer, yet. The trailer finally dropped right before Thanksgiving, with a last minute release date at Christmas in NYC and LA only. It didn't go wider until Jan. 13 of 2017, with little promotion outside of social media. I remember AFTER it left theaters (in a week or two), people were saying, "Wait. Did this even come out, yet?" They weren't even aware that it had come and gone, already. So, you can blame Paramount for under-promoting it, but also maybe even Scorsese for tinkering with it until the last minute. The only other way was to delay it and release it the next year, and wait for festivals and such.

Either way, it likely would never have been a hit, regardless. That's why he couldn't get it funded for decades. The money people knew it would flop, especially nowadays. And it did.

I keep waiting for it to be re-discovered, one day, and get a belated cult following.

A delay to the next year would have probably been the smarter choice. Get it to compete at Cannes or Venice or Tribeca or somewhere.

Oh well, though. I have the Blu-ray, and it's gorgeous. It did little to slow Scorsese's career and he's still making movies for hundreds of millions of dollars. I wish more people had seen it and appreciated it, but at least he's finding someone to fund his hugely expensive projects, even giving him money for reshoots.

I'm just so happy that Killers of the Flower Moon is getting a wide release.

Me, too!

I am so happy to get to see this (maybe more than once) in a theater.

One of the most ignored truly great films of the past 20 years.

An absolute masterpiece, and no one cared, because they were too caught up in "I hate religion". When, of course, it's not a religious film (as 'God's Not Dead', "Heaven is For Real' and that sort of thing), but rather is a film about religion, and religious people, in a period of history.

And, my word, is it a stunner. Gorgeous film.
I wonder if it could ever get a UHD release.

Probably only if it were re-released by a boutique like Criterion. I doubt Paramount would bother. They've never made a penny from it.

The Paramount Presents line does its own thing. Maybe. I wouldn't count on it or hold my breath, though.

I bet the Blu-ray is the best we're gonna get.

Does Paramount Presents distribute movies theatrically or just the home release?

Indeed, a lot of sites are reporting that nearly 4 hour runtime, now.

We'll have to wait until the runtime is officially published. Gonna be a long one, for sure.

Hopefully it's great enough to justify that.

Me, too!

I'm one of the people who never found "The Irishman" too long.
I've seen it 15 times since it first opened. I can quote it, now. I absolutely love it.

I hope this is one for the ages.

Maybe it makes me sound cranky, but I suspect a 3.5-hour long character drama caused people to spend time looking at their phone and look up occasionally, eventually feeling that nothing is happening and therefore the movie was boring and overlong.

But this is no Goodfellas. It is a very different movie and if you aren't paying attention you'll miss De Niro's journey. The movie is an amazing work of art and in my view one of the best movies of the 2010s, but releasing it on streaming gave people way too many distractions. But I am glad we got it regardless as seemingly only Netflix would fund it.

And since people are mentioning Silence, that too is an unappreciated masterpiece of a movie. But then again I continue to have an appreciation for Scorsese's less remembered movies, rather than Raging Bull and Goodfellas. I am also a huge fan of Aviator, for example.

And Scorsese wasn't subtle in his criticism of religion's role in colonialism. That's literally one of the main points of the movie.

Quote:
Inquisitor Inoue: You missionaries do not know Japan.

Rodrigues: And you do not know Christianity.

Inoue: There are many who think of your religion as a curse. I do not. I see it in another way. But still dangerous.

Thierry Fremaux says Martin Scorsese’s ‘KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON’ is “extremely strong” and made him cry.

I so envy him for getting to see it long before everyone else, LOL.

I can't wait. I'm not making it to Cannes, of course, so I'll be waiting like everyone else until October. Gives me a film to be excited about for months to come.

Runtime: 234 minutes.

Slap a small intermission in there, we’ll all be fine.
