I know.
So, what I'm thinking is; at some stage surely they'll have another 2-disc set and then they will presumably have to manufacture 2-disc plastic cases.
So I'll maybe pick up a few of the plastic cases and then hang on until 2-disc cases are available to get the rest.

BTW, I'm wondering if someone could help me out regarding the replacement cases. Jon Mulvaney quoted me $15 PER CASE
If I was to get Criterion to send cases to someone here who's in the US, could they then forward on to me in Ireland? Obviously I would cover that shipping cost. I expect it wouldn't cost much anyway for a few empty cases (so I've no idea why they want me to pay so much).

I asked this on their Facebook page and was told that they would not be doing a Benjamin Button replacement case.

I don't really have much problem with the existing blu-case/slipcover setup, it'd just be nice to get it to match for uniformity... And these clear cases are sexy!

thanks for the laserdisc update. I already have a few of those in my collection I would like to add a few more for the supplements and of course the great art work on the 12" LD cases

I dont mind Benjamin Buttons blue case with a slipcase either but if they offered a replacement i would probably get it.

there are a few mainstream titles which were once on criterion dvd or ld. i wish criterion still had the licenses for them so we could buy them in blu-rays as well.

I dont mind Blade Runner or Citizen Kane type big movies being not on Criterion because they are good sellers and whatever studio is releasing them will do a good job(like they did for blade runner) but titles like the invasion of
the body snatchers , zulu , the silence of the lambs are unlikely going to get a decent release(the silence of the lambs blu-ray is average quality release imho)

I agree with you on the silence of the lambs, that blu ray is really not very good transfer at all. The HD trailer looks better. Maybe one day it will look the way it is supposed to.

I don't mean to nitpick, but seriously, have you seen the UK release of Zulu? It is absolutely amazing....... one of the best transfers to digital I have ever seen. Its also region free and has a decent selection of Special features as well. Check it and the 40th anniversary of the Italian Job out as well, both stellar Paramount titles....

Default The Third Man - Aspect Ratio

I don't know if this is the right thread for this...
I just bought The Third Man (probably snatched the last copy) for $30 at the local Fry's.
IMDB lists the film's aspect ratio as 1.37:1, however the Blu-ray case says it's 1.33:1.
Is this a typo on Criterion's part? Or did they crop the film?
Thanks for the help.

Are you kidding me? Even the DNR hounds over as AVS Forums said there was no noticeable DNR or image manipulation on Zulu. It was shot on Super Technirama 70 which has 2x the resolution as standard 35mm shot films. There is just naturally little to no grain evident in this process. Just because something old doesn't exhibit grain doesn't automatically mean DNR. There were multitudes of different film stocks used over time, and each carries their own unique characteristics regarding grain structure etc. Every review I have seen, as well as just looking it over again on my system, it looks immaculate, and the multitude of 4-5 star IQ ratings would attest to that.

I'm neither blind nor stupid, but both "Zulu" and "The Italian Job" look horribly DNR-ed and "Zulu" has horrible EE halos.

By the way, this is what those AVS "DNR Hounds" say:

Well first of all, I wasn't calling anyone blind nor stupid, just having a discussion here. I was referring to the actual review on their site, as well as all of the other review sites. I just find it interesting that none of the professional reviewers seem to have any problems with it, granted we don't all watch these things on 25 foot screens, but I digress.

Remembering that Zulu is in the U.S. public domain, it's unlikely that it will get a better release over here unless Criterion restore it or license the UK print from Paramount UK.

And The Italian Job has largely been ignored here, so while we may eventually see an American edition of the Paramount UK disc, I really wouldn't bet on seeing a better release of that either.

FWIW, I think the UK releases are fantastic.

From DVDbeaver's review of Zulu: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare/zulu.htm

To quote the site: "Unreal. This comparison may be one of the 'poster boys' for the Blu-ray format. Although the MGM DVD from 2003 was vastly ahead of the other standard definition transfers - the hi-def Blu-ray blows all of them right out of the water. Aside from the expected colors (see deep rich reds) and detail being abundantly superior this new Paramount disc shows incredible depth. It is framed in around 2.25:1 and is marginally cropped beside the MGM but aside from that the Blu-ray is ridiculously improved. The disc is approaching 40 Gig with the feature being over 35 Gig. The bitrate is 35.1 - almost 5 times that of the competent MGM DVD. Wow - this image quality is one of the most stunning of the year compounded by the fact the film is almost 45 years old."

If Zulu is a poster boy for anything, it is for DNR. It's terrible.

Yeah, judging from the screen shots, it's a bit too much DNR for my taste.

1st: I don't see nothing wrong with it.
2nd: why is this being talked about in the criterion page again?
