Thanks. I suspected that might be what it is. Yeah, I'd love to see that doc but I'm not sure I want to buy it just for the visuals with no understanding of the language. That's how I felt about the 4 hour Mononoke doc on dvd.

The Golden Globes doesn't really consider foreign animated films for the Best Animated Feature award. They only consider them for Best Foreign Film. While The Wind Rises did get a foreign film Golden Globe nomination last year, Kaguya did not this year. |

I can't believe The Wind Rises lost to The Great Beauty. Now THAT is absurd, IMO.
...and how in the world did Kaguya not get a nomination if it was elligible (which it was, from the sound if things). It's been praised as one of the high notes of Takahata's career. |

The Oscars and Globe animation nominees/winners are almost always crap.
They didn't even nominate Waltz With Bashir....neither one of them. Awful! And every time there's a Pixar movie it almost always wins. One of the Oscar bloggers was afraid to watch Princess Kaguya because it had princess in the title. That's probably indicative of how other people, particularly voters, might feel with no knowledge whatsoever and points to how the Japanese films really need to be campaigned for a year to have a chance (i.e. Spirited Away). Too bad, really, the animation craft for that film is exemplary...and we all know hime does not mean "princess" in the American-Disney sense. |

"The Tale of Princess Kaguya" is the title that Studio Ghibli has used for its English title before selecting GKids as the North American distributor, and Ghibli's other international partner Wild Bunch also uses this title. And it's seems close to the Japanese title anyway. |

Anyways as Fahrenheit said it sounds like the princess title worked against them as far as awards go and using princess did help box office. Last edited by deschain; 12-12-2014 at 05:48 PM. |

I'm sure the box office success is more important for the studio, so that's fine. I realize these awards are silly, but I still have to root for Ghibli.

I doubt North America Box Office is much of a factor in deciding on the English title. And distribution by GKids will always keep the box office at independent film levels. According to Box Office Mojo, it has earned $501, 888 on 29 screens so far in North America, but hopefully it will reach the $1 million (with 49 screens) that Poppy Hill earned in North America. But it definitely won't reach what The Wind Rises earned ($5.2 million over 496 screens in North America as it was distributed by Disney). Of course, the North America BD release will definitely be the revenue generator for Ghibli and GKids, as it is for most films. Can't wait for the release (as it will never reach any theaters near me). |

Its obviously a factor, its maybe not the main factor, but you're being naive by suggesting that they wouldn't consider what impact the english title has on the box office. after all they're not releasing the film for fun.

Say what you want about the English dubs, but I'm sure Studio Ghibli probably spends more on producing the English dub than other anime distributors do in North America (not to say that the English dubs by other distributors are inferior, but Studio Ghibli and their partners in dub production and distribution certainly want what they see as the best cast available). And Studio Ghibli personnel (whether it be Miyazaki or Mr. Welxer) continue to reiterate while they understand many fans want to watch the film in its original production language, Ghibli also wants their films to be accessible to others around the world, and dubs remain the best way for many audiences to view their films. |

Still waiting on my copy of Kaguya as it was held back by Customs, something I knew would happen as I ordered from CDJapan. I totally missed that it was being released and wanted to get it before Christmas as a present for myself.
