Viz Licenses Original Sailor Moon Anime Franchise

The biggest news from the Moonlight Party was that Sailor Moon R: The Movie is being dubbed right now and will have a limited theatrical run in January. They said there will be "treats" for attending, so I don't know if they mean an exclusive introduction or actual swag. I presume it will be a Fathom event, but they gave zero details about the specifics. They also announced the short "Sailor Guardian Make Up" will be attached to it in theaters as it was in Japan and were careful to say that it's an "HD restoration from Japan," as in Viz didn't touch the video.

They ended the party without saying anything about episodes now being available and I just checked Hulu, still no dub. Sounds like this time they are waiting to make the dub available for streaming until after the release. They showed a few clips, but did not do full episodes like they did in the past.

Viz Media announced during its Moonlight Party livestream event on Friday that it is working with Eleven Arts to screen the Sailor Moon R: The Movie (Sailor Moon R Movie: Promise of the Rose) anime film in theaters in the United States in January.

The event will also screen the "Make Up! Sailor Guardians" (Make-Up! Sailor Senshi) anime short alongside the film. The companies will screen the film and short in both an English-dubbed version and an English-subtitled version. Theatergoers will also get a bonus gift while supplies last.

Viz Media is currently streaming a trailer for the film, and is also streaming a video introducing the voice of Fiore for the film, Ben Diskin.

The film originally opened in Japan in 1993. Geneon Entertainment previously released the film on VHS and DVD between 1999-2004.

In the film's story, when Mamoru was little, he gave a rose to a little boy named Fiore. Fiore promised that one day he would bring Mamoru lots of flowers. Now Fiore has come back to earth but his intentions are not merely to fulfill a promise.

The "Make Up! Sailor Guardians" anime short also premiered in 1993. In the short, Usagi and Chibi-Usa are at a cafe and overhear two girls talking about who is the best Sailor Guardian and describe the traits that make her the best.

Anime News Network will publish an interview with voice actors Robbie Daymond (Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask), Stephanie Sheh (Usagi/Sailor Moon), Diskin, and Viz Media's Senior Manager of Animation Marketing Charlene Ingram next week.

You're probably right, but I don't think the episodes usually appear until sometime after midnight.

I haven't tuned in to every Moonlight Party, but for both parts of Sailor Moon R, all episodes launched during the party and the evening's events included a "watch along" where you could second screen with the Moonlight Party and listen to the Viz team talk about that episode. This time, they just played clips, made a mocktail, announced the R movie, and told everyone they can buy S part 1 on Tuesday.

Remember a while back viz finally addressed the quality issues on the DVDs and blu Rays. Maybe they fixed the issue and are keeping everything hush hush till they release the sets and episodes online.

I would imagine if that were true, they would want to show clips with newly restored footage during the Moonlight Party and talk about that. Instead, they made no mention of picture quality when discussing Part 1 of S and all of the clips shown looked exactly like the subtitled episodes on Hulu.

If anything, I'm guessing that since they made a vague statement about listening to feedback and delaying the release, they're hoping for a boost in sales despite not having changed anything. We all know the real reason for the delay is because they wanted to dub Crystal 3 at the same time since they had the voice cast in the studio.

So I gave in and used my Amazon balance for SP1. Was hoping for a dub stream, but we are apparently not getting one anytime
soon and I do want the sets regardless. I still need SMR (both) and part 1 of Crystal. I will likely get them with Christmas money. lol

Lol, good luck seeing the movie outside of California, Texas, Chicago and New York City then. I'd be amazed if they brought it anywhere else since Eleven Arts is notoriously bad at even distribution.

I live in California and sometimes these Eleven Arts movies play near me and other times don't.

I live just outside of NYC, but I've never seen a movie in the city. If it doesn't play at my local theater that's within walking distance, I tend not to go.

I placed my order yesterday via Amazon and had to choose one-day shipping so it would come on Tuesday vs the 17th.

Anyway, the status has been updated from "pre-ordered" to "preparing for shipment". Just thought I'd mentioned that since some people
may have felt like there was going to be a delay because apparently no one has received an early copy from RightStuf or another store?

Could be an SMR exclusive since it's the first and most popular movie, but I do think a theatrical release for all is likely.

Yeah no one got it yet. According to viz during their moonlight party they recived s on Friday. That would mean everyone else recived theirs on Friday also.
