And yes, normally I do watch ‪"‎Independence Day‬" on the ‪fourth of July‬, but with ‪"Independence Day: Resurgence‬" opening on 6/24/16 I figured I'd skip this year 😉😋

Second time viewing this film. I was curious to see how my opinion of it would change, since I've spent the last few years defending it from people who think it's some kind of abomination. Well, my opinion has changed...

...not one damn bit. I still like it, blemishes and all. The Sarah Connor Chronicles is still, for me, the "true" follow-up to the first two films, but I'm willing to accept Salvation as a very fun "what if?" side-story; which is better than I can say for T3, which I don't want to accept at all.

Take us out, John.

[Show spoiler]

People will just call me a Bale fanboy (and they'd be right), but one of the things that I love about that movie is that Bale has this strength of presence where you just believe that this guy could be the guy he's supposed to be. Really, I thought everyone gave very good performances.

I definitely to revisit this soon.

Bale strikes me as a guy who takes every role too seriously, but I can't deny that some of my favorite scenes in the movie are good because he's taking it seriously. Probably my favorite is when he's confronted with the Arnold T-800 in the factory. Earlier he said to Marcus (and Skynet as a whole), "You tried to kill my mother, Sarah Connor. You killed my father, Kyle Reese. You will not kill me." But in the later scene he's beaten, he's resigned to the idea that these machines are finally going to kill him, and he screams at it, "DO IT!! YOU SON OF A B*TCH!!" One little scene has more depth, emotion, and credibility than all of T3, which felt like a big joke, aside from some trite ominous speeches.

And that's just one of the many good scenes. I could bore you talking about the other elements I like, Kyle Reese, the birth of the resistance, John Connor the prophet, the extremely well-directed action scenes, etc. I could also bore you complaining about all the things wrong with the movie, all the obvious bad decisions (mostly concerning the casting of Sam Worthington, the writing of his character, and the useless character of Blair) and screw-ups, but the scenes I like, I like so much that they make me not care so much about the bad ones.

A very flawed film, but certainly worthy of re-evaluation by those who hate it. There's too much good in it for it to be so easily dismissed. It's a sequel that I don't know is entirely adequate and worthy, I don't know if the parts add up to a really good whole, but so many of those parts are terrific. Some scenes are a 1/5 and others are a 5/5, and the whole thing evens out to about a 3/5, I guess.

I'm horrible at reviewing movies, so I'll stop embarrassing myself and end this here.

I thought that was an excellent commentary on the film, actually. Nothing to feel embarrassed about.

As to Bale, and taking roles too seriously ... anyone who would like this for one film:

And like this for another:

He's definitely taking some things pretty seriously. Heh. I know that's not what you were really getting at, but the man's insanely dedicated, and as we all know can fly off the handle.

But like I was saying earlier, he has this presence in my eyes that comes right off the screen. That's why I respect his work so much.
