Look I like Tenet more of the two movies, but it’s definitely a more demanding film. GvK is big popcorn entertainment.

Also, I’d say Tenet is slightly less appropriate, both are PG-13 yes but Tenet’s violence feels more real and threatening (particularly with the domestic violence subplot), plus it has an F bomb (in a pretty intense situation) that I don’t think GvK did. But really there is appropriate for kids and family friendly, and I struggle to imagine someone younger than a teenager really getting into Tenet (similarly The Father is probably more family appropriate than Tenet but it’s not made for kids at all, a mature film clearly made for adults).

i've never seen tenet so i can't judge it but this does show that nolan isn't this big box office director who brings in the masses. he is vastly overrated as a director and imo has done only two decent films in his career(the prestige and interstellar).

getting back to gvk the film was everything i hoped for and more. since the pandemic i missed being in the cinema watching a big budget spectacle and this delivered in spades.

i'm glad it's been a huge success and is bringing the cinema back. now if regal could open their theaters again that would be nice.

That's where we'll disagree. Pre-pandemic, Tenet was predicted to do very well. He's not overrated, because who else can make original movies and have them be good movies that do well at the BO?

But GvK is a dumb action-blockbuster. Which is what people like to see.

Well, no KOTM did not have an incoherent storyline like GvK. I knew the minute they showed Kong scratching his butt it was going to be bad. That wasn't funny, cute and added nothing to the movie. Kong is supposed to be a fearsome Titan, not a house pet, that supposed put Godzilla, King of All Monsters, in check. In KTOM, we got Mothra, King Ghidora, Rodan and they were all done well.I didn't see any of those Titans diminish or dumb down in any way.

Kong has something in this movie, that those other monsters do not characterization.

Kong actually has a story arc that can be invested in. The others are just there to wreck things and die.

Opinions vary. Kong acted like a giant ape. Every single iteration of King Kong has him captured and (with the exception of this Kong) shown off to the masses, like a pet. I thought it was awesome in Skull Island when he just wants to sit and eat squid.

I'll agree with Ghidorah, but Mothra and Rodan just weren't good. Not only did they barely accomplish anything in KotM, I'd argue that KotM and the future of this "Monsterverse" would be better if they were not included in the movie. The Titans only purpose was to wake up and wreak havoc on the way to Ghidorah...to just kinda bow down to him.

I just finished watching it and I have mixed feelings. I liked a lot of it quite a bit. But a few bad points really drag it down, the biggest problem was that Conspiracy Theory nutcase. He's quite possibly the most annoying character I've seen since Jar Jar Binks. He put a real dent in the movie and I have no idea what the writers or directors are smoking putting that horrible character in there. If it was just the two kids on their own it would have far better.

Also, Godzilla seems far smaller, and too quick on his feet all of a sudden. The fights didn't have the same weight or gravity of KoM or G2014. The camera was set too high so it didn't feel like two Titans fighting. Alexander Skarsgård came off weirdly like he had a complete lack of confidence and it was off-putting seeing him like that. Usually, he's always sure of himself.

Apart from that, I enjoyed the rest. I was disappointed that we didn't see some more tag-team K and G and the last fight was way too short and lack impressive movies, looks like they spent all their ideas on the KvG match.

I know it looks like I'm crapping on the movie but I'm just disappointed on what should have been the best of the franchise was simply just ok. I like about 70% of the movie, the remaining 30% was garbage.

IMO, the 10 or so minutes featuring Rodan when (he?) breaks out of his volcano prison and wipes out the fighters was the highlight of that movie and arguably the best that particular monster has been portrayed in *any* Toho movie.

The Dark Knight is not only decent it’s a masterpiece. The greatest superhero film ever made.

Honestly I feel the same way about a lot of what you said and I think many of the issues I had with the film can be attributed to reshoots. Any time a studio takes the original script and shot footage and changes it all around, 9 times out of 10 we end up with a product that feels messy and strange. I don’t know when studios will ever learn. If you sign off on a script and a story then just stick to it. Stop meddling with it after the fact and let the original story play out as it was intended. Honestly , social media and online reactions are probably the worst thing to have happened to films. I think the reaction to KOTM drastically changed the course of this movie. Studios don’t stand by the visions anymore - they get scared off by everything online rather than trusting the film.

Do you think Adam Wingard is just saying what the studio wants him to say when he says the theatrical version is his ultimate version and he would never do a director’s cut? Because I can’t imagine any good director would be happy about scrapping so much footage from his own movie and squandering the potential of characters that SHOULD have been important (Ren Serizawa). Remember, this is an exact quote from David Ayer about Suicide Squad back in 2016:

“But this cut of the movie is my cut, there’s no sort of parallel universe version of the movie, the released movie is my cut.“

Now compare that to 2021 when he is publicly calling for the studio to release his intended cut.

I thought this one was a ton of fun! Solid 4/5 for me, for what it is. I liked all of the MonsterVerse movies, but if I were to rank them I would say:

1. Godzilla vs Kong
2. Kong Skull Island
3. Godzilla King of the Monsters
4. Godzilla

I'm thinking that's it for the series as I doubt they'll be to work out another deal with Toho.

1a) GVK (Best action out of the 4 but has mainly forgettable human characters)
1b) Skull Island (Better human characters and OK action scenes)
2) Godzilla 14 (Has that Jaws type build-up with Big G sadly shown mainly at the end)
3) King of the Monsters (Cool monster designs but has a weak plot and too many quick-cut monster fight scenes with the human characters trying to avoid the destruction)

Why? Toho probably loves the MonsterVerse. They get to rake in cash from distributing the films in Japan, and licensing worldwide, all without the trouble and risk of producing the movies themselves.

Yeah they will definitely work out a deal for sure for more monsterverse movies with Zilla, Kong, Mothra and other giants. It already sits on 300 million WW. It will do more than KOTM in a restricted inviroment. Shows people eat these movies up. Plus both Legendary and Warners G v K Twitter has acknowledged the trend #continuethemonsterverse now too.

I think its success probably has more to do with being the first big release in a while as a pandemic is (supposedly) winding down. To say it shows people eat these movies up, when the previous movie lost money seems a bit generous.

Can’t agree with that since its now 3 to 1 of these doing good. KOTM had too much murky dark fight scenes. You could hardly see what was going on. If they keep it like Skull and this the monsterverse will thrive.

This is a complaint which has been levelled at the 2014 movie mainly, FAR more so than KOTM. So KOTM did bad because it was too dark and you couldn't see what was going on but the 2014 movie was not guilty of this? All i read about the 2014 movie is that it's too dark and you can't see what's going on.

I think GvK success is more due to timing and a dearth of other big movies.
