That's what is so ridiculous here. They should have made those players ineligible for the Super Bowl to begin with. Arkansas would have won the game and we'd have a legit Sugar Bowl winner. Instead we have a vacated bowl win and no winner. Thanks NCAA...

How serious are the allegations against Oregon? I'd hate to see them take a big hit from the NCAA as they have really have been the new juggernaut the Pac-12 has needed since USC is only a shell of its former self.

It's really uncertain right now how serious the allegations against Oregon are. Even if it's true that Oregon paid Will Lyles purely for influence in recruiting players it's unclear if there's any rules violation. However, if Oregon gave the NCAA fake paperwork that was supposed to make it seem like Lyles worked as a scouting service they could be in some trouble. I don't think the school itself is going to face severe penalties but Chip Kelly could get in some trouble (potentially losing his job) if it's found he knowingly lied to them.

SEC gets another win I knew the Razorbacks would eek it out

Yeah it sounds like Lyles was simply incompetent and could help Oregon escape because of it. Especially since he's going around on all the programs saying "he didn't know!"

Georgia running back Caleb King is academically ineligible and will miss the season. They are now very thin at running back without King or 2010 leading rusher Washaun Ealey, who left the school after discipline issues. True freshman Isaiah Crowell, who ESPN ranked as the top running back and #4 overall recruit in the 2011 class, will probably be the starting running back now, and he will have 2 very difficult games right away as Georgia plays Boise State and South Carolina to start the season.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6749969

Edit: King has declared for the NFL supplemental draft.

I have the chance to go to the L-ville/UK game, would you all go if you all had the chance? As a big L-ville fan like I am, I've never been to a game between the two in state rivalary.

Yep, and the guy who would've started the first game against Boise State is now suspended for that game. So UGA's running backs will be a true freshman (Crowell, above), a redshirt freshman (Boo Malcomb), and a former high school running back turned linebacker until 3 days ago (Richard Samuel).

Not exactly the RB corp I'd want for the opener or for South Carolina in week 2, but the SEC East is a mess this year so the Dawgs still have a chance.

Ohio State got some good news on Friday when the NCAA announced that it had not found any new violations to charge Ohio State with, and would not be hitting the school with a "failure to monitor" charge. From the report in the Columbus Dispatch:

The NCAA has notified Ohio State University that it will not face charges of failing to appropriately monitor its football team as part of a memorabilia-sales scandal that brought down former Coach Jim Tressel.

The NCAA has not uncovered any new, unreported violations during its investigation and agrees with Ohio State that Tressel was the only university official aware of violations by his players and that he failed to report them.

"Other than (two redacted player names) and (Ted) Sarniak, there is no indication that Tressel provided or discussed the information he received ... with anyone else, particularly athletics administrators," the NCAA reported in an enforcement staff case summary.

The entire case summary can be read here. You can also read all 139 pages of the NCAA's interview with Jim Tressel here.

What does this mean for Ohio State? Well, no school has ever received a postseason or television ban without being hit with the "failure to monitor" charge, and the odds of Ohio State facing such a punishment are now essentially non-existent. This also means that the blame for the entire situation will continue to lie solely at Jim Tressel's feet, and since he's already stepped down as head coach at Ohio State, the rest of the school's athletic department can sleep soundly tonight and in the future.

This news all comes after a report was released by a Columbus-area television station earlier on Friday afternoon saying that Tressel had told the NCAA he informed others at Ohio State about the transgressions of his players in December of 2010. A full month before Ohio State claims it came upon any information regarding the case.

Ohio State "categorically" denied the report, and with this latest announcement from the NCAA, it seems the NCAA felt the same way.

Why'd they come down on USC then? USC suffering isn't bad for business?

Considering a lot of the big plays were made by ineligible players, including the interception of Mallet that sealed the game for OSU, I would have to agree with you there.

So with that forfeit what does this make OSU in bowl games against SEC teams? 0-9-1NC???

I'm not an SEC guy BTW

Looks like South Carolina's QB coach is a fitting "mentor" for Garcia afterall.

South Carolina QB Coach Arrested, Suspended

South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus was arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with nuisance conduct, The State Newspaper first reported.

According to the police report, two officers saw Mangus "facing Main St. urinating on the street curb and roadway," at 1:31 a.m. Tuesday. The report stated that another officer was called to the scene and when he approached Mangus, he was "unsteady on his feet and he had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person."

The report also stated that when the 42-year-old Mangus was questioned by the officer, Mangus' speech was slurred and he failed to provide the officer with "straight answers." Mangus was issued a ticket for $470, handcuffed and taken to the Greenville County Detention Center.

In a statement through the university, South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier said Mangus has been suspended indefinitely for his actions.

"G.A. has been suspended from all coaching activities until this matter is resolved," Spurrier said. "We are disappointed in his actions and will handle it accordingly."

Mangus was in Greenville for the annual South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association convention that is being held there this week. Mangus, who is in his third year at South Carolina, is seen as a mentor for troubled quarterback Stephen Garcia and was instrumental in Garcia's on-field development last season.

Garcia was suspended from the team this spring after his own alcohol-related incident, but returned to working out with the team in June. During SEC media days last week, Spurrier said he expects Garcia to return to the team full time for the start of preseason practice.

Butch Davis has been fired as head coach of the North Carolina football team, according to CBSSports.com sources.

The termination comes after the new Board of Trustees met in a closed session today to discuss the future of the football program. Davis remained employed for over a year as North Carolina has undergone NCAA investigation for both impermissible benefits and academic improprieties. Earlier this summer, North Carolina received their Notice of Allegations from the NCAA - which detailed 9 different violations being alleged against the football program.

Great move, but it should've been done several weeks ago and not mere days before practice opens and 5+ weeks before the season opener.

I just don't get why it took so long for North Carolina to fire Butch Davis. They could have fired him a year ago when all their players got suspended. It's been clear that too many violations could be at least partially linked to Davis. His associate head coach and good friend John Blake was well-known to be linked to an agent yet Davis ignored it. A tutor that was formerly employed by Butch was potentially committing academic fraud. Even if Butch did nothing wrong personally it's nearly impossible for a coach to survive a scandal involving so many violations.

Me either Butch should have been gone real quick... And what else I don't get is why you aren't talking Albert in the NFL thread
