I finally got to see this on 4k the other night and it looked amazing. My only complaint is that they don't have the international cut which runs 30 minutes less and is a much better watch in my opinion. I'm hoping they'll get that version out sometime soon in 4k because I can't see myself going to the longer version very often.

I finally caved and got this for the remastered bluray. Good price.

Put the bluray in the case for the old BD, with the original VHS art. Problem solved!

This is a great movie, that gets better with every viewing. My favorite Stanley Kubrick, regardless of what the butthurt bookworms say.

Full Metal Jacket, next, please!

The remastered Blu-ray did really look good.

Sure, but here's hoping for Barry Lyndon 4K. Not my favorite Kubrick film, but an OCN scan presented in 4k HDR should be a slam dunk. Beautiful film.

This film is just stunning in 4K. Dear lord. I really like the slip it came with too.

Would be cool to get both cuts. I can't agree the shorter one is better. I really love the world, and 30 minutes of cuts is too darn much for me.

I haven't watched the shorter cut since getting the 2007 BD. It feels like a TV edit now.

I can't imagine the movie without the backstory material, which I think is critical for the film.

I'm a guy who usually prefers fast paces, but for this movie, I think the slower pace and running time benefit the story, the psychological aspect of the horror etc.

So yes, for me, US cut all the way.

Well that's the thing, you still get all the relevant backstory you need in the shorter cut. It mainly cuts out fluff like the long side plot of the Cook retuning to the overlook, the silly skeletons and cobwebs at the end and other little bits here and there that don't affect the overall story. I don't know how true it is but I'd heard even Kubrick preferred this cut.

The Warner Bros. releases so far have been outstanding - but I absolutely fell in love with this 4k version of The Shining. Have a 4k Blu Ray player hooked up to a 55 inch Samsung TV and soundbar, and was blown away just by the intro. One of the better 4k releases.

I first saw the film on HBO as an eleven year old when my parents weren't looking, back when HBO would run the same movie multiple times a week. I saw it again in college when a local chain was doing revival screenings on the weekends. Owned it on DVD. Even liked the TV miniseries "King" version of the material.

My 4K HDR 3D TV was broken due to a failed board, took almost ten weeks to fix (final prce tag, $576...got seriously gouged on labor)...anyway, it's working again, and I spun the 4k Shining and it damn near blew my eyeballs out of my head. I've never seen this film looking as amazing as this. Opening credits alone had me texting my wife, "You have GOT to see this".

Bravo to everyone involved in bringing this project to fruition. Problem is, it just has me salivating at the idea of other films that deserve the same treatment.

No you don't. Jack isn't even an alcoholic in the short cut, and I'd say that's a pretty darned important detail. His prior abuse of Danny is only mentioned once in passing, as well.

As for "Kubrick preferring the short cut", I think it's lack of release with this 4K remastering should answer that question once and for all.

Got the book for Christmas and I’m 250 pages in and almost none of it is in the movie. Now I know why King hates it.

I grew up on the short cut and was able to read between the lines that he had alcohol issues in his past. It really doesn't need to be spelled out.

And maybe you're unaware but Kubrick is dead, so I'm not sure how this current 4k release is any indication of his preferred version....

Stanley Kubrick has been dead for twenty years.

Arguably the best film adaption of The Shining is Event Horizon.

Just an opinion.

That said, when folks say It is a loyal adaption of the book I tend to want to scream also.

Not that I'm criticising any of these films as they are tremendous but a loyal adaption of King books is rare. It's basically Stand by Me, Green Mile and Trucks. And I'm certainly not praising Trucks.

If the movies have proved anything, it's spending time near a black hole drives everyone insane. Next thing you know, you've turned your crew into zombies, embraced Satanic degradation and gouged your eyes out, or you're trying to talk to your daughter through the second hand on your wristwatch.

At the end of the day Kubrick decided to live in England for many years so how important was America really to him? He allowed both cuts to exist. If he felt those scenes were important he wouldn't have cut them. Same thing with King's book, it's not important to the film, it's a different thing altogether, he should be thankful he got paid, that's all Kubrick did, just paid him to use the character names and the hotel setting, Kubrick didn't sit there and read it and say oh wow a great book, the alcoholic father get's possessed by ghosts and this and that. He just paid him for the use of the characters and the setting that was it. He had no intention of following the book closely.
