As far as I know the DE is the same but the Theatrical Cut has a better encode in the TMP Deluxe set.

This exactly. There is only one Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition UHD. There are two versions of the UHD with the theatrical cut. The better of the two discs is the one that's exclusive to "The Complete Adventure" set which also includes the "Special Longer Version."

New 4K Steelbook coming November 19th

Quote:
Celebrate the 45th Anniversary of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE with this limited-edition Steelbook featuring the original theatrical cut in 4K Ultra HD, and a bonus remastered Blu-ray. This bold blockbuster launched one of the longest running movie franchises, reuniting the cast of the original STAR TREK series, including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, and James Doohan. The adventure begins when an unidentified alien intruder destroys three powerful Klingon cruisers. Captain James T. Kirk returns to the helm of a newly transformed U.S.S. Enterprise to take command. As a bonus, an exclusive booklet boldly explores the original marketing materials and behind the scenes images from the Paramount archives.

No plastic slip or poster? Boo-urns. Theatrical cut supremacy (tho it's a shame it's not the betterer encoded SLV disc).

Yep, the encode is chunkier (tho it's not terrible on the theatrical only disc, it's just betterer on the SLV) AND you get proper stylised subtitles for the Vulcan stuff at the beginning instead of generic electronic ones as per the theatrical only UHD: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=2916

Okay, so this is trash (disc content-wise) made only for Steelbook-obsessed collectors. The packaging is 100% the only incentive to buy. It better be dirt cheap.

It's an Anniversary release, just like The Search for Spock one earlier this year. Main difference is the lack of a clear slip, which in that case, with its poster art, made more sense than it would here. It comes with a new booklet with archive content in it.

I’m not sure your point. I didn’t deny any of that. It’s a crushing disappointment of a disc paired with juicy collectible packaging. As a die-hard collector and Trekkie, I’m sure I’ll buy it, but I hope it’s dirt cheap (and I hope Walmart ends up offering another exclusive with a little more added razzle-dazzle) because it’s the very definition of “lipstick on a pig” (the pig being a TC-only disc, not the unfairly maligned film, which I adore).

While people are saying it's "garbage", remember that those theater program reprints, while small (boo), are pretty important because they've been ignored for almost 40 years. I have a stack of them.

I have wanted someway to get the theatrical cut on UHD without buying one of the boxsets as I own the individual releases of 1-10 so this is perfect, no duplicated discs and great artwork.

I did as well, but I decided to hang onto my original BD of the theatrical and just be content with that. I prefer the director's cut anyway so it's not a huge deal.

Sorry, I guess I was just misinterpreting the tone of your post. I was just pointing out that this release is in line with their previous anniversary release earlier in the year, but yeah, it would be nice if they also included the Director's Edition too. I do like that they didn't tie the booklet to a WM exclusive this time, like they did with Search for Spoeck.

The DISC is garbage. Only the DISC.

I have had my eye on the remastered Blu-ray of TMP but would like the option to watch it in 4K if the urge ever took me lol

Wow, I thought the Steel release would be the one where they fudged on the "SLV cut is exclusive one time only" claim -- but I guess not.
I would have bought this if it had the SLV and left it unopened and only open it if my SLV disc ever got ruined. TC is my least favorite but love the SLV for having all the cut footage thrown in.
It's damn pretty though. Wonder if they'll do Trek 5 or just ignore it....

I wonder if this will lead to another theatrical re-release like the Search for Spock anniversary steelbook lead to. We got TMP Director's Cut in cinemas a few years back, but would be great to see the original cut on the big screen too.

The space shots in TMP genuinely blew me away on the big screen, so I'd definitely go and see this again...especially if it's lacking the shoddy CGI additions.

No time to do it for an anniversary release unless they just squeak it in for December (highly doubtful), which means a five year wait for another anniversary opportunity. With Paramount being bought by Skydance and all the upheaval that comes therein, I don’t expect anymore Steelbook releases in this series.
