I've just finished watching Red, and I have to say that if, like Blue and White, the transfer has its share of issues during underexposed scenes, the scenes with enough light are wonderfully transferred, and make the film looks like it was shot last year.

Moreover, the soundtracks, if a little less dynamic than the Blow Out 2.0 track (which is probably the best 2.0 track I've ever heard from Criterion), are amazing on all three movies, with my slight preference to White due to the music being more dynamicly rendered.

Hello everyone. New Criterion Collector here.

Just thought I would introduce myself. I only recently (around a year ago) began collecting Criterion films and thought I would join in on the conversation here.

Welcome. I must say, you're already doing much better than most of the people in this forum that have been posting for a long time. I hope you are able to overlook the majority of the BS and find some insightful conversation.

Welcome. It could be argued that I started buying them more readily about this time last year, but I have been well aware of Criterion since 2003. I was just too cheap to buy their releases for 70 dollars a pop for a DVD. I'm now up to about 55-65, depending on how you count the bonus feature films, and the Brazil DVD (single disc edition) I bought used in 2008 for 10 bucks.

So it took a lot of spending of old films from the 1920s - 1960s to make me not want to buy as many newer released films. And as I've always said, the blu-ray format benefits old films the most. It's expected for a new movie to have perfect video and audio quality. But it's really impressive when an old movie gets a new restoration on blu-ray (or DVD). Anyone else going through this, especially after the Barnes and Noble Criterion sale?
Nope. I've always bought more "old" movies than new, even on DVD. I do a lot of bargin bin diving, and managed to get quite a few steals for 5 bucks. I also watch TCM religiously, every day, or PVR something off of it. Criterion has allowed me to develop an interest for foreign language films though.

Since you mention this......

"Super 8" is in my "Gold-Box" for $18.99

I have heard so many people rave about it etc.... but I knew nothing about the film itself. I just read the review, and honestly a year or two ago I would have clicked "Buy it now" almost immediately, but now I'm actually going to head to blockbuster and pay $2.20 or so for the BD rental (if they have it.... those bums only got Tree of Life on DVD.... but after watching it, I'll be picking it up as soon as it goes on sale!)

I have a lot on my shelves right now that I say "Why did I buy that.... oh that's right, it was a quick sale for $15" so I'm trying to keep from repeating that too often.

I would have done the same a year ago too, but now I think, "instead of buying Super 8, I could just use that money to find more rewatchable classics on blu-ray such as Night of the Hunter - a movie that has such longer staying power.

My interest in seeing Super 8 has dipped to near-zero after having been really keen on seeing it prior to the film actually releasing.

Seems like most of the hype was pre-release and a lot of audience enthusiasm waned after actually seeing it.

I wouldn't mind catching it at some point, but not enough to put down purchase--or rental--money for it.

But you can use the $5 voucher and get it for $13.99. A bargain for a new release.

I agree with you though but I don't rent I wait until they can be purchased for $9.99 or less and they I buy them. A rental here is about $4

The movie is worth it though for Ella Fanning. For a child performer this year, she was one of the stand outs of the year from this film.

What is this rental thing? All the rental places closed down here. Only way to watch something before buying it on DVD/BD is to wait for it to come on Netflix or TV. you could order a PPV, and even then, that's waiting a month or two, to rent a movie for 4 bucks, and you lose that cash if your cable/satellite service craps out during a storm.

I only every bought new releases if I really liked the film/it looked really interesting and had good reviews. A few were blind buys, and not worth it (this was during the DVD days). I'm more interested in pre-ordering new releases for old movies, such as Lady and the Tramp and Anatomy of a Murder. The last "new" movie I bought was Harry Potter 7.2, the rest were new releases of old films like Star Wars, LOTR, 12 Angry Men, or the Lion King.

I find that a lot of films coming out don't appeal to me much anymore. There's really been nothing that jumps out and says, I have to own this film because it's so awesome, bar Harry Potter of course. I'll probably grab Three Musketeers, The Muppets, and Sherlock Holmes 2 when they come out, but I'm in no rush to get them.

To be honest I have access to VOD through the cable service but that's not really HD is it?

If I already think that $4 is damn expensive for a BD rental, I don't even thing about the other, albeit cheaper, option.

As for video stores, yes, they are pretty much gone and I think that I have 1 or 2 around here. I don't rent a movie since I don't know when (2001?) so I ain't keeping track how many stores are open. The biggest place (Blockbuster) closed it's doors in 2008 or 2009, so my only option if I want to check out a movie before I buy it is by downloading HD rips. With 700+ discs, I can't be encouraging piracy by doing that, can't I

"In an interview with All Things Shining Malick's longtime editor Billy Weber reveals that plans are afoot for a brand new release. "Warner Bros. or Criterion is putting out a new version of 'Badlands' fairly soon," he stated plainly. Weber also says he's recorded a commentary track, but is unsure if it will be used or not."

It will probably be a Warner title. Warner does not license out films.

Don't feel bad, I do the same, but usually the SD copies. Even then, I haven't d/led in about 4 or 5 months, as there really hasn't been anything that appeals to me. I've gone to the theatre a few times, but really, I'm more into watching older films that come on TCM.

Would anyone else rather watch a nice black and white movie over a loud action blockbuster any day of the week like me?

My how I've changed. Thanks Criterion.
