You can't argue that they don't fit in with the majority of Criterion's catalog.

The way I look at it is that these movies can have a wide release from major studios and will sell well and are in no need to be part of the Criterion collection. So many movies are ignored that are worth being release but major studios will not bother with them because well in short they won't sell as much as they would like. I have no problem with that, studios are there to make money, I understand that. So if Criterion is willing to take the time to restore some obscure movies, all good we can have them for those who are interested in them. The Rock, Robocop....others like that, they can have their major releases and will sell very well thank you very much. My take, I prefer when Criterion give's us movies that the majority of people would not want or even know have been made. Even something like Seven Samurai (which is fairly popular) is hardly acknowledge by most people because it's in B&W and with subtiltes and as such must be boring. So what are the chances of getting movies from Poland or South America from the major studios? In short from zero to none I understand why Criterion will go for Godzilla or Dazed & Confused and The Rock, because these give them more money to put in their account with the hope of getting the more obscure ones. That it is only reason they are in the collection. Do they deserve to be? My opnion is no they don't.

When people complain about mainstream releases in the collection, they always miss an important point, it's not just about sales, these films are also a gateway drug in a sense. I originally discovered the Criterion Collection because of films like The Rock and Robocop.

Now I'm pretty close to a full blown film snob, but that's where it all started for me, and I can't be the only one.

True but I still don't think they belong in the collection

Snob, Per Dictionary.com (in part)-

a person who believes himself or herself an expert or connoisseur in a given field and is condescending toward or disdainful of those who hold other opinions or have different tastes regarding this field: a "Criterion/ MOC Eureka" snob.

Origin:
1775–85; orig. uncert; first used as a nickname for a cobbler or cobbler's apprentice, hence a townsman, someone of low class or lacking good breeding, commoner, hence someone who imitates persons of higher rank

Well, I am not a cobbler, but I guess you could say the breeding thing might apply. There you have it. I am a snob.

My DVDs and Blu-rays are the same.

For Blu-rays specifically though,
Mine are in no order. After watching one, I move it to the left of the shelf (getting ready for my second shelf though) so films I haven't seen yet, or haven't watched on Blu-ray since getting it are all to the far right. Right now there are probably a dozen of them, of which 5 or so are in the "I have never seen this film before" category.

I do keep all of the box sets etc. together though.... although I don't know why, other than the fact that it's easier to pull a couple out and slide the rest down the shelf when I watch something from the "far right" as stated in my organization (or lack there of) scheme.

For the most part, spine number. I do have a couple box sets like the BBS set and Monterey Pop kept together, in front of Seven Samurai (earliest spine I own on BD).

I do that for Disney releases and for "classic films" up until 1980. Some films are organised according to my preference for them, and I've broken some down via genre, and organised them by preference or release year. And any film that is somewhat biographical or historical, such as Henry VIII, or Capote, I've organised them by the time period in which the film took place.

I'm weird.

Cool. I only have a few right now & I have them by themselves by title. Will probably change to spine # once I add to the collection.

That looks like they're all in order of Spine # to me.

EDIT:

I'm actually in need of more shelves (for all movies, both DVD and Blu-ray) so I was thinking about covering the shorter wall in my component room (it's a large walk-in-closet) with shelves. It's about 5' wide, so I would have about 8 shelves, 5' long to hold my Criterion films, and then the other shelves I have would hold everything else, with the exception of the boxed-up DVDs I don't have room for.

Neither. I do it by spine colour. I tend to treat most of my collection like that - it makes it easier for me when I try to find something.

Wow! Now that's what I call a nice Criterion Collection! I like it that you have some of the DVD releases as well. There are so many fantastic movies which haven't been upgraded to BD yet.
Kiss Me Deadly is a crazy flick. But I really enjoyed it. Not the average Noir.

The entire trilogy is about the connectedness of people... and how. The image is from the beginning of Red, when Valentine's boyfriend calls her, so the abstractness is actually the inside of telephone wires as the call moves along the cable. It's a little abstract, yes, but it fits the overall theme of the series.
