I feel exactly the same way. Words are not coming to me much at the moment.

I am very sad to hear the news. Can't really think of much to say other than that Vilya was always very kind to me in the few conversations we shared, despite me not participating much on this thread - he is a true forum friend. He'll be in my prayers.

Vilya,

The world is a better place with you in it, so please stick around for as long as humanly possible.

Your friend,

Jeff

This is sad and terrifying to hear. Hoping Vilya pulls through this and comes back stronger.

Vilya's Diagnosis

Received a short email from Vilya who said it was OK to post info from a PM. He expressed great gratitude to all of you for the words of care.

Vilya should be a great inspiration to all of us to make everyday count for we never know how many we have remaining.

[Show spoiler]I have been diagnosed with Cardiac Amyloidosis, specifically ATTR-CM, which is also known as Transthyretin Amyloidosis. There are two types of ATTR-CM, familial (or hereditary) and Wild type. I have the familial form.

This disease is rare occurring in about 1 out of every 100,000 people, but they also say that it is underdiagnosed due to it having symptoms that mirror congestive heart failure.

This disease has stages and on the scale used with my testing, the stages run from 0-3. I am in the end stage or stage 3.

The bottom line is that my prognosis is extremely poor: 6-14 months on average. I am being referred to the Amyloidosis treatment center at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis as there is no treatment available where I live.

The treatment offered is mostly experimental clinical trails. The very few drugs used to treat this condition are insanely expensive ($225,000 per year for Tafamidis alone) and they basically just buy the patient a little more time. Liver and heart transplants are also sometimes attempted, but I doubt that I am a candidate for such extreme measures considering my age and my other medical problems.

I have attached a couple of very short youtube videos that give a general explanation of my disease.

I am still in a bit of shock; the gravity of the situation has not fully hit me yet. I am trying very hard not to despair.

I think it says everything that none of us have the energy or will to carry on with everyday chat after this news, such is the concern for our friend.

Quote about going to the movies...

"Going to a movie theater is less about the size of the screen and the perfection of the sound system, and more about a decision to not multitask. You're making a deal between yourself and a piece of art to give it your full attention" - James Cameron

But that’s what I do all the time in my home theatre. I press play and watch any movie until the end of the credits. No food, no drinks, no phone

The phones of my guests are annoying but they wouldn't go anywhere without them. I considered no food but I have a popcorn machine and I love candy.

Whenever I do have guests I enjoy having to clean up the popcorn afterwords. I was an usher at an AMC in the 1980's and so cleaning the theater brings back memories of good times.

IMO Vilya will do what needs to be done and use his time wisely. He would probably post here but he is very weak and most likely taking care of more important business.

I sure miss his post in this thread. I believe he would want us to continue the support of physical media and we do a little of that by contributing positive info to this thread. I have procured several titles recently based on comments made in this very thread.

Yeah, he is hugely missed. You are also right and even me posting that stuff means there is a risk of it becoming about me and how I feel when the only person that matters right now is Vilya and how he feels, if that makes sense?

So, like you say, concentrating on positive contributions from now on.

Speaking of physical media, ....

50th Anniversary box set for Dark Side of the Moon looks amazing and has quite a lot of vinyl.

It includes CD and gatefold vinyl of the new 2023 remastered studio album and Blu-Ray + DVD audio featuring the original 5.1 mix and remastered stereo versions. The set also includes additional new Blu-ray disc of Atmos mix, plus CD and LP of ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon – Live At Wembley Empire Pool, London, 1974’, a 160-page hardback photo book, a music book, replica 7” singles and memorabilia.

I have the blu ray disc from the previous immersion box set and the SACD version. This looks so fun to have, plenty of good stuff !

I wonder how many more versions of DSOTM I can own. I have 2 original US vinyl copies, the CP35-3017 31A9 Harvest CD, the DIDX-226 Capitol CD, MFSL Gold CD, 20th anniversary CD, 2011 Immersion set, 2011 180g vinyl.

Yeah.....

I would like high res surround sound of the whole catalog and I am getting there slowly. I already have the Vinyl, SACD, and Blu Ray releases of DSotM.

The recent release of Animals was great.

Edit - I almost don't want to mention that some people are uptight about the use of the rainbow in the new logos.

Netflix Saw DVD Rental Revenue Plummet 50% in 2022

Quote:
Netflix’s legacy by-mail DVD rental business took another step toward fiscal irrelevance in 2022 with revenue dropping 50% to $100 million for the fiscal year ended Dec. 31, 2022. The company generated $200 million in annual disc rental revenue in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Netflix, which began operations in April 1998 renting DVD movies by mail, does not include packaged media rental revenue in its fiscal results. The streamer last reported more than 2.1 million disc subscribers at the end of 2019.

Netflix’s standard DVD plan is $7.99 a month for one disc at a time ($9.99 when renting Blu-ray Disc titles), and the premier plan is $11.99 a month for two DVDs out at a time ($14.99 for Blu-ray).
