After Superman (Williams), these probably are second place for me with comic book movies. The Dark Knight at #3.

Goldenthal's Batman scores are severely underrated. His work is equal to Elfman's, for me.

When Batman dives into the pit to save Chase and Dick and "Batterdammerung" starts playing... that's cinema.

I managed to snag rips of not only the La-La Land Records Expanded Forever release, but also the cancelled Batman & Robin album and the recording sessions for both Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.

Made me a very, very happy boy.

Noice! I never got the La-La Land release of Forever, but I've got the 4CD set they did for the two Burtons. Why did they cancel B&R?

I have the La La Land Records 2-CD release of Batman Forever.

I'd do nasty things for a decent release of Batman & Robin.

I actually prefer his main theme for Batman Forever/Batman & Robin over Elfman's for Batman 89/Returns. Has that bombastic 90s orchestral feel down to a tee.

Regarding Elfman's Spiderman, it's definitely unique. I don't mind it...sort of like it...yet there is still something missing to it. There's almost a sadness to it too.

I also don't like the time reversal scene at all.
For how much this movie's writing is highly praised, that part is complete nonsense: we see that Superman reversing time undoes all the damage done by the San Andreas Fault missile but Lois, Jimmy, and Otis talk as if the consequences of the impact still happened... what? If the missile's damage still happened, why did the ground below Lois' car not collapse again? This scene also completely forgets that the second missile existed.
Additionally, it's kind of a shame that Superman being reminded that he is not allowed to interfiere with human history goes nowhere, but to be fair that is more of a fault of Superman II's writers not having wanted to touch on that.

I'm still waiting for a modern of Superman take that even comes close and with the heart and soul of this one.
The third act works emotionally (Clark's love for Lois is stronger than the "do not interfere" rule), and it's a good payoff, but I think that logically, it really doesn't make much sense.

There's no punishment for interfering, and what defines "interfering" if that's what Superman does whenever he uses his abilities on Earth? I don't think we see what actually happens to the two missiles after he reverses time, either (I might have forgotten that bit). Are they still in the air?

The other thing is that the third act ties the movie too closely to contemporary movie trends of the 70s. The last third is a disaster movie, basically - long shots of land and structures being destroyed as a visual spectacle, which isn't cinematically very interesting - with a superhero twist. I give Superman II the edge for being a little more timeless and less of its era (plus, I think the ending is better).

Sounds like background sonic wallpaper type music to me. Nothing memorable, nothing you would remember outside the films they play inside. I was bitterly disappointed in all of those scores.

I'm just glad I have the scores from that era of music where there were actual themes that made you feel something for the characters and the situations they were in. Composers like Williams and Goldsmith were the top of the game.

Plenty of it is very memorable and invigorating. Is it different from the orchestral music of Williams and Elfman? Yes, but the beauty of film music is the variety it offers from the talented musicians involved hoping only to better the film they're scoring.

As I mentioned before, I think all of the imperfections of the first movie are still nicely worked out in an emotional sense as a viewer (for me anyway).

There is no question that Superman II (either version) is more 'satisfying' in the sense of that epic battle with the three villians. It's like a thirst quench missing from the first movie and something you've been waiting for that finally happens.

Damn straight.. his music doesn't add anything to the films.. scores from films are mostly missing themes.. elfman and Williams are so much better.
ever since zimmer took over the scores for films, it lost something special.

Zimmer is the worse thing to happen to films scores.

Superman: The Movie is my all time favorite film.. its just a beautiful film from start to finish.. are things perfect. no. probably from the third act to the campy villains. years ago Superman the movie didn't get the respect until marvel started to get big. without the Grandpa of the superhero genre. we would not have the current crop of comic book films.

I know Bryan Singer meant well with Superman Returns. I liked Man of Steel. Both Singer and Snyder missed the point about Superman.. JJ Abrams did the same with star trek and star wars.

I will admit I was underwhelm on the James Gunn Superman trailer. I hope its good. I will be there to see it. Do I think it will match the original film? I don't know. I have been staying out that thread.

I'm an outlier who really enjoyed Star Trek Beyond and thought it was on par with the original television series and the best of the original movies. Of course, Abrams didn't direct that one (Justin Lin did).

I also loved The Last Jedi, but, yep, Abrams didn't direct that one, either.

I sense a pattern.

From the very start of the film to the first word spoken on Krypton....there's been nothing like it in film history to me. The visuals, the score, the anticipation......the awe.

I liked Giacchino's score for the first Doctor Strange film, and Danny Elfman's score for the second. I also liked Ludwing Goransson's music for Black Panther.

I'm also into Daniel Pemberton's scores for the two animated Spider-Verse films. I don't know if they "count."

The score to The Batman is very good. The score to The Penguin was good as well. Michael’s son Mick Giacchino who did The Penguin and part of the score in The Batman is pretty good.
